ReplyA smokers cigarette smoke shouldn't get into my lungs. Their right to smoke ends when their exhaled smoke hits my lungs. It should be handled as a politeness issue, out of respect for others. As for children, they are captives of irresponsible parents.

ReplyI don't see banning parents from smoking in a car when they have children in them as 'creeping fascism.' From all I can see of this, it's a human rights bill. Someone has to speak up for the right of children to grow up without having a known, harmful substance penetrate their bodies through the lungs and eyes every day.
I think the comment about Mr. Lunt's mother smoking while he was in the womb was a crude putdown designed to humiliate. You just shouldn't insult someone's mother. Anyone who makes comments like this, negates whatever s/he is trying to say. When I see that kind of thing, I note the person's name and know to discredit or even ignore what they say in the future.

yerkillinme, for once I agree with you. Smokers need to be reminded that their 'choice' to smoke has consequences for the children they gush on-and-on about how they love them.
Deb. above you said children don't spend much time in the car with their parents. I think statistically the amount of time children spend in the car keeps going up.
Children as passive smokers have their lungs, hearts, and kidneys harmed. We need to learn about the medical effect of smoking on children. -

that should tell smokers something....
it used to be that people smoked because it was 'cool' but now the only one's who
smoke are the addicts. They don't care if their butt goes out and starts a fire or lands on a baby in a carseat of the car behind. Smokers are self-absorbed and choose smoking over the well being of their children. They are selfish and not having an an car ashtray is a reminder.
You are always call on adults and parents to be responsible, how come the irresponsible smokers with captive toddler in their cars get their lungs poisoned. Why do you give them a pass on this issue?? -

ReplyWe had a BBQ chicken with onions this week at Scorpio's Restaurant in Attleboro and it was fabulous. Smokey flavor, lots of cheese and chunks of chicken, just a little bite to it. Side salad was terrific, too, no iceberg lettuce is served there.

ReplyRichard, there isn't any debate that Rep. Paul Heroux is doing a great job. He's a whirlwind and Attleboro is lucky to have him.
Here's an example of Paul appearing before a panel and doing just what he said he was going to do, speak and act in the best interest of his 'boss'--the Attleboro taxpayer and voters. Paul Heroux works hard and long hours. He does the leg work to investigate state agencies in person and read up on issues. Then he votes for only the most proven and effective programs.
Contrast that with recent lockstep votes by Republican Reps. (Rep. Poirier, and fellow travellers), as reported in recent vote tallies in the Sun Chronicle. Note how Republicans just vote lockstep. They never have to think--Just vote the Republican party line, like George Ross always did.
It's so great to have a State Rep. with a brain and a heart that has a moderate, balanced view on issues.

ReplyPaul Heroux is doing such a fabulous job and has started so many worthwhile projects in the state house, plus his service to the community, will make him really hard to beat. He's well liked too.

ReplyThank you Paul for your advocacy for those with mental illness. It is needed in this area. We meed to reduce the stigma attached to mental illness. It's an illness like any other.
I was part of a local mental health group that met at the Attleboro Library which brought in speakers to further education on mental health issues. It's inactive now but could be restarted. Much needs to be done. www.nami.org.

Progress!? (Let's start a movement).
I'm working on some ideas for next fall, maybe lead some writing classes. We each get to choose our own "movement."
But yes, I'd join anyone who wants to get smoking out of public spaces. If you'll join me in getting Macy's to stop putting stinky perfumed inserts in their ads. By the time I smell it the whole paper stinks and I can't breathe.
I notice the local Shaw's has taken away the bench where clerks and people waiting for busses used to sit and smoke. I never complained but plenty of people must have. The area was always black from spilled sodas and coffee. Now it's clean.
