On Saturday afternoon, three robotics teams from North Andover High School competed in a tournament that would send the top robots into a regional tournament in Boston. “Bowled Over!” is a game played by robots. The robots, controlled by their human creators, race to complete certain objectives. Robots are required to turn over milk crates, collect balls, and move bowling balls in order to earn points. The tournament was organized by First Tech Challenge. As stated on their website, “FTC is designed for those who want to compete head to head, using a sports model. Teams of up to 10 students are responsible for designing, building, and programming their robots to compete in an alliance format against other teams.” Teammates used Sony …

North Andover ended their regular season on a five match winning streak.
North Andover finished 2011 with its best regular season record since 2005. The Knights finished up the 2011 campaign with a romp of North Reading. The Scarlet Knights took all five matches against the Hornets. It was North Andover’s fifth consecutive win. The Knights’ final regular season record for the year is 12-4. Mike Terranova continued his solid season with a 6-1, 6-1 win. Sherwin Yamin was victorious at second singles 6-2, 6-1. Alex Hammond was flawless at third singles with a 6-0, 6-0 win. At first doubles, Ross Boyle and Alex Durfee won 6-3, 3-6, 6-4. At second doubles, Andrew Smith and Kyle White recovered from a first set falter to win 2-6, 6-4, 6-3. The MIAA team tennis tournament pairings will be released on June 1.

The Merrimack College Warriors made history two nights ago, but last night was another story. The Warriors and Boston College Eagles went into the third period of the Hockey East Championship game tied at three, but the Eagles outscored Merrimack 3-1 in the final frame to come away with a 5-3 win. Merrimack’s head coach Mark Dennehy summed it up best: “It’s a good learning lesson for us; that’s the bad news,” he said. “The good news is, we continue on,” Dennehy said. “I get to coach these young men again next week, which we’re obviously excited about,” he said. A true Scarlet Knights fan will spend their evening at Salem State University watching the Knights hockey squad take on Bishop Fenwick and then hightail it back to the high school for the basketball team’s 7 p.m. tip-off against Melrose High. A postseason storm will hit tomorrow when both winter teams begin their respective playoff pursuits for glory. The Knights hockey team will start the festivities off with a 5 p.m. face-off against Bishop Fenwick. Head coach Mike McVeigh and the North Andover Scarlet Knights have accomplished quite a bit in the last two seasons. Two Cape Ann League Titles (one shared with Wilmington) and 35 wins have highlighted the past two years for North Andover basketball fans. North Andover has clinched a remarkable five straight Cape Ann League crowns. The Crozier Crazies have had a lot to cheer about recently, and that is expected to continue on Tuesday night when the Knights hosts fourteenth ranked Melrose High. Head coach Peter Marfione has done an outstanding job in his first year coaching the North Andover hockey squad. "We're really trying to grow the boys hockey program into a very competitive Division 2 program," said North Andover High School Athletic Director Jon Longley before the season began. The 2010-11 school year has been one of the most successful campaigns in recent memory for the bunch on Osgood Street known as the Scarlet Knights. The boys soccer and girls field hockey teams had memorable playoff runs in the fall. The Lady Knights basketball team and Scarlet Knights hockey teams are extremely promising this winter. But perhaps the most exciting thing about this school year is that the two teams with the largest following among the students of NAHS are having the most success.
