North Andover voted for Scott Brown and owns more hybrid cars than the state average.
North Andover is green and red. That’s what we found when we compared data from the Massachusetts Registry of Motor Vehicles to the vote in the 2012 U.S. Senate race. You can see the results in the map above: Large circles suggest towns with more hybrid ownership per capita, and the red/blue color suggests which way those towns voted last year. In North Andover, 18.5 of every 1,000 vehicles is a hybrid, compared to the state average of 18. Patch’s research suggests the state has a good number of what might be called “green Republican” communities. More than 40 percent of the communities where Republican Scott Brown carried the vote have an above average numbers of hybrids. The data is a nice rebuttal to the national trends of hybrid/GOP …

A UMass Lowell/Boston Herald poll shows he is in a strong position to run in 2014.
Results of a UMass Lowell/Boston Herald poll this week show former Senator Scott Brown is more popular than he was when he lost his re-election bid last fall and is in a strong position to run for governor in 2014. The independent, nonpartisan poll surveyed 600 Massachusetts registered voters between Saturday, March 2, and Tuesday, March 5. With regard to Brown, the poll — which asked voters for their opinions on whether they would vote for Brown if he runs for governor — showed he has considerable bipartisan support, with 32.7 percent saying they are very likely to vote for him and 26 percent somewhat likely. Kristen Hughes, the former deputy finance chairman for the Sen. Scott Brown campaign, won a narrow vote Thursday night to become the new chairwoman of the Massachusetts Republican Party, according to Boston.com. Hughes, 35, will replace outgoing chairman Robert A. Maginn Jr. Before joining Brown's campaign – and becoming his choice to lead the GOP through the upcoming election cycle – Hughes worked as a Quincy city councilor. As Brown's aide, she helped raise $42 million. Scott Brown ended speculation Friday afternoon as to whether he would run for U.S. Senate, announcing that he is not entering the race for the seat left vacant by John Kerry’s confirmation to the post of Secretary of State. Two Democratic political opponents – Congressman Stephen Lynch (D-South Boston) and Congressman Edward Markey (D-Malden) – will face off in the April 30 primary with the special election set for June 25. There are currently no Republican candidates in the race. Markey, who represents the 5th Congressional District, kicked off his campaign in December. Boston.com is reporting an early salvo has been fired in what could be the Senate special election showdown.
In a radio interview Wednesday morning, U.S. Sen. Scott Brown (R-MA) jabbed at Democratic Congressman Edward Markey about his residency in Malden, according to a Boston.com report. Brown questioned if Markey still lives in Massachusetts anymore and also told WTKK-FM he often sees members of the Bay State congressional delegation on planes trips home but said "I have never seen Ed on the airplane—ever," according to the report. After President Obama’s selection of John Kerry as Secretary of State, there’s a lot of interest in the senior senator’s seat.
With U.S. Senator John Kerry as President Barack Obama’s pick for Secretary of State, it’s anyone’s guess who will run for the seat in a special election next summer. Kerry was nominated by Obama on Dec. 21. If Kerry is appointed, Governor Deval Patrick will appoint an interim senator, who will be named to the position before the special election. Families of soldiers got a Christmas gift in North Andover.
On Saturday, Smolak Farms was packed with military families picking out Christmas trees in the third annual Trees For Troops event. Trees For Troops is a program organized by BAE Systems and the USO to provide local soldiers and their families with Christmas trees and more. Often when a soldier is deployed or has recently returned, his or her family struggles to make ends meet. In the troubled economy of the past few years, that reality has been exacerbated. "We wouldn't be here if it wasn't for them preserving our freedoms," BEA Systems spokesperson Lu Goncalves-Getty said. Lt. Governor Tim Murray couldn't hold out any longer. On Thursday, he told the Greater Boston Chamber of Commerce he'd like to be governor, according to WBUR. Mind you, he didn't say he would run, just that he wants to be governor. With the election two years away, starting an official campaign now would be a bit premature. But Murray's not alone. Governor Deval Patrick has said he will not run in 2014, leaving the door open for Murray and a host of other suitors. State treasurer Steve Grossman and 2010 Republican gubernatorial candidate Charlie Baker have also expressed interest in a run in 2014. The Washington Post is reporting that President Obama is considering appointing Massachusetts U.S. Sen. John Kerry as the Secretary of Defense. There was speculation Kerry would become the next Secretary of State. Either way Kerry's move to possibly become a member of Obama's cabinet will open up his current seat. Should he be appointed, a special election would be held to finish out Kerry's term, which expires in 2014.
