Do You Know What This Photo Is?

Help us figure out where this photo was taken.

Inga Larson of the North Andover Historical Society sent us this photo from their collection. She's not sure what exactly the people are doing or what they're constructing, so we thought we'd ask you, our knowledgeable readers, if you have any idea. It looks like they may be in the Common. Perhaps installing the Phillips Brooks statue? Also, do you know what that dark thing is up against that tree? Leave a comment and let us know.

Stephen - thanks for the memories. I've seen the photos of the old house, it was quite something. I did not realise the lot laid empty for so long. As a child of the 1970s, I feel a bit like I was one of the last generations to play outside unrestrained. I cycled all over town, played in the fields and streams near my house catching crayfish and letting them go - I can imagine the old foundation …   more ›

NH Woman Creates Business that is 'Simply Delish'

See how her hobby was transformed into a budding business and provides a North Andover business with tasty meals.

In 2003, Teresa Stauber began selling pasta and potato salads with the Simply Delish label at local New Hampshire markets. She now sells Simply Delish products throughout New Hampshire and Massachusetts, including Meat House in North Andover, and has opened a 2,000 sq. ft. commercial kitchen in the Manchester mill yard. "I went from having no employees to now having 12 part-timers on my payroll," said Stauber. Patch recently caught up with the proud owner for a good ol' fashion business Q&A. This is what she had to say: Ever since I was very young I wanted to pursue a career in the culinary field but my parents pushed me into medicine. They felt the food business was too risky. I'm glad I worked as a Nurse for eight year but very happy …

Thunderstorm Causes Power Outages

National Grid crews are working to restore power after a heavy afternoon thunderstorm.

An afternoon thunderstorm Saturday knocked out power to more than 2,000 customers in town, National Grid is reporting. At about 5 p.m., police and firefighters went to the scene of a burning transformer struck by a fallen tree on Autran Avenue. The transformer was on fire but the fire was put out. People at the scene said there was heavy smoke as well. The power went out in that area as a result. National Grid is at the scene, and according to reports, there are more than 2,000 customers without power in the area of town between Route 114 and Boxford (the area around Salem and Boxford streets and Sharpners Pond Road). If your power goes out, call National Grid's power outage hotline at 1-800-465-1212. Check back for further updates. UPDATE…

I thought the lightening hit a tree in the yard, it was so loud. We lost power and my basement flooded, but that was all. So much rain and hail in a short time. Hope everyone is ok.   more ›

Weekend Talker: Youth Sports Trophies for All?

Join in the discussion and share your views.

People like to express their opinions. So welcome to Weekend Talker, where we will discuss a different topic every weekend. This week's topic is youth sports trophies. Some people feel that every child who participates in youth sports should receive a trophy, saying it helps build self-esteem. Others feel kids should be taught competition and trophies should only be given to kids who win and perform well. What are your thoughts? Share in the comments and discuss.

The trophies-for-all ethos cheapens the concept of athletic (or any competitive) excellence while depriving children of both the thrill of true self-esteem derived from achievement, as well as the crucial life lesson of disappointment in a, frankly, non-essential arena. (That is, no one's life should be ruined by not making the Little League all-star team or finishing out of the "money" in the …   more ›

Severe Thunderstorms Possible Today

An alert has been issued for Essex County.

The National Weather Service has issued a warning that severe thunderstorms may creep up on North Andover and the rest of Essex County Friday afternoon and evening. "A few thunderstorms may become severe with the primary threat being damaging wind gusts," the warning says. "Heavy rainfall will also be a concern which could lead to isolated flooding if storms move over the same areas." The storms are expected to start between 2 and 3 p.m. and move toward the coast this evening. If you're planning to be outdoors, use caution and watch for gathering storm clouds. Flooding could be an issue, especially in vulnerable spots like Route 125 near Osgood Landing and Route 114 near the North Andover Mall. If your power goes out, call National Grid's …
