If You See Elder Abuse, Report It

The following was submitted by the North Andover Senior Center.

“Efforts to address elder abuse are 40 years behind those of child abuse and 20 years behind those of domestic violence” said Kathy Greenlee, Assistant Secretary for Aging (ASA) and Administration for Community Living Administrator. Greenlee added “That if we do not act now and apply the lessons we have learned from combating child abuse and domestic violence and sexual assault to develop a comprehensive approach that brings together all of the different resources to prevent elder abuse, the problem will only deepen.  Elder abuse is a problem that is only going to intensify as the population ages and the number of older persons increases." Elder abuse can happen to anyone and can occur  anywhere—in a person’s own home, in nursing homes  or…

Does Obamacare qualify? How about the IRS? Or the Social Security scam? Elder abuse is bad, but it doesn't compare to the instances of child abuse that are being perpetrated! Twelve years of content-free indoctrination in government captivity (K-12), trillions in debt, 20% youth unemployment, ... but they do get free condoms ... I guess that makes up for it.   more ›

Beware of Jury Duty Scams

The following was submitted by the North Andover Senior Center.

The phone rings, you pick it up, and the caller identifies himself as an officer of the court. He says you failed to report for jury duty and that a warrant is out for your arrest. You say you never received a notice. To clear it up, the caller says he'll need some information for "verification purposes"-your birth date, social security number, maybe even a credit card number. This is when you should hang up the phone. It's a scam. Jury duty scams have been around for years, but have seen resurgence in recent months. Communities in more than a dozen states have issued public warnings about cold calls from people claiming to be court officials seeking personal information. As a rule, court officers never ask for confidential information …

The following was submitted by the North Andover Senior Center.

National Volunteer Month is a time to celebrate people doing extraordinary things through service. Whenever you see a successful, busy and active Senior Center, you can count on the fact that there are many volunteers working behind the scenes, making things happen.  This year we will be honoring over 150 volunteers who have given 50 hours or more of direct services or support to the North Andover Senior Center.  We have chosen to do this special celebration in June. Town Officials, Speakers, entertainers, and group facilitators have given back to their community, we thank you. So, be sure and thank volunteers when you see them in action. Caregiving Starts with Communication

The following was submitted by the North Andover Senior Center.

What should you do when you first realize Mom or Dad needs help? How do you identify the kind of help he or she needs? The first step would be to take a thorough look at your parent’s lifestyle; assessing physical, emotional, financial and living situation. This will help you to identify strengths and weaknesses. Always talk with your parents or loved ones. This is all about them.  Their wishes and priorities should be at the top at all times.  If they are capable of doing so, your loved ones should be the ones making the decisions. It is important to recognize the more help you get from others the better the care will be that you provide for your loves ones. Involving others regularly and often makes it less likely that you will be …

Seniors, Take a Walk

The following was submitted by Irene O'Brien of the North Andover Senior Center.

More than 145 million adults now include walking as part of a physically active lifestyle. More than 6 in 10 people walk for transportation or for fun, relaxation, or exercise, or for activities such as walking the dog. Physical activity helps control weight, but it has other benefits. Physical activity such as walking can help improve health. People who are physically active live longer have a lower risk for heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes and depression. If you're not sure about becoming active or boosting your level of physical activity because you're afraid of getting hurt, the good news is that moderate-intensity aerobic activity, like brisk walking, is generally safe for most people.   Start slowly. Cardiac events, such as a …
