The training exercise simulated a school shooting scenario.

For a few days this week, the sound of gunshots filled North Andover High School. The North Andover Police Department, with cooperation with the North Andover School Department, conducted active shooter/crisis intervention drills inside the High School on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. As with a real-life situation, there was no time to prepare, no time to go get other equipment, ballistic vests or additional firepower. VIDEO: Gallagher Takes the Reins

Paul Gallagher, longtime lieutenant of the North Andover Police, took his oath as new interim police chief Monday.

In a ceremony that marked a new era in local law enforcement, North Andover Police got a new chief Monday. Paul Gallagher, longtime lieutenant on the department, took his oath as the interim police chief in front of his family, friends and fellow members of the department. Gallagher was appointed to the position by the Board of Selectmen on April 29, in the wake of Chief Richard Stanley's decision to leave the department for a police chief position in Wareham. On Monday, after Town Clerk Joyce Bradshaw swore him in, Gallagher had his son Brendan, also on the police force, pin his chief badge on him.
