Accused Bank Robber Held Without Bail, More Charges Pending

The accused is an Afghanistan War veteran who says he developed a drug problem after returning from war.

An Afghanistan War veteran charged with robbing Citizens Bank in North Andover Saturday as well as a recent bank robbery in Salem, N.H., is held without bail. And prosecutors say charges are expected this afternoon for a recent Chelmsford robbery. Joseph Costello, 26, of Wilmington, was arraigned in Lawrence District Court Tuesday and ordered to be held on $100,000 cash bail for the North Andover robbery and held without bail pending extradition for the Salem, N.H., robbery. Costello allegedly walked into Citizens Bank Saturday at about 4:30 p.m. and demanded the tellers give him money, saying he had explosives in the bank. BREAKING: Bank Robbing Suspect Arrested

The man is suspected of robbing multiple banks in the area.

Police have made an arrest in connection with Saturday's bank robbery in North Andover, and the man charged is suspected of robberies Chelmsford, Reading and Salem, N.H., as well. Joseph Costello, 26, of 52 Lawrence Drive, Lowell, was arrested Tuesday for attempted armed robbery after investigation by police in the four communities. Costello allegedly walked into Citizens Bank Saturday at about 4:30 p.m. and demanded the tellers give him money, saying he had explosives in the bank. After a teller told him to take off his sunglasses, he allegedly fled without getting any cash. Bank Robber Suspected in Other Area Robberies

Police may be dealing with a serial bank robber.

The man police say attempted to rob the Citizens Bank at Stop & Shop Saturday may have had some practice recently. Police believe the same man may have robbed banks in Chelmsford, Reading and Salem, N.H., recently. The suspect walked into Citizens Bank Saturday at about 4:30 p.m. and demanded the tellers give him money, saying he had explosives in the bank. One teller told him to take off his sunglasses and the man fled without getting any cash. Police and fire crews did a sweep of the store and made sure there were no explosives, and the building was reopened for business within an hour. BREAKING: Man Tries to Rob Bank With Bomb Threat

Police are searching for the suspect.

Police say a man walked into Citizens Bank at Stop & Shop and tried to rob the bank using a bomb threat. At about 4:30 p.m. Saturday, a man reportedly walked into the bank and told the tellers that he had explosives in the building and demanded they give him money. A teller told the man to take off his sunglasses, police said, and the man then fled. North Andover Police and Fire departments went to the store and checked for explosives with a K-9 unit. After a clean sweep, the building was open for business within the hour. Police released a surveilance camera image of the suspect. Alleged Bank Robber Held on Bail

Terry Woodard faces numerous charges after Tuesday's highway chase.

The man police say robbed the TD Bank on Andover Street and was arrested after a highway pursuit spanning several towns was arraigned in Lawrence District Court Wednesday. Terry Woodard, 43, of Newport, Maine, is held on $250,000 bail, charged with armed robbery, operating under the influence of alcohol, failure to stop for police officer, operating to endanger, operating without a license and possession of a class C substance, according to District Attorney Jonathan Blodgett's office. Late Tuesday afternoon, North Andover Police received an alert that a man had just robbed TD Bank and fled in a red pick-up truck with a ladder rack on top. Bank Robber Tased, Caught in Salisbury, Faces Multiple Charges

Police say the man was drunk and in possession of drugs.

A man from Maine is in police custody after police say he robbed the TD Bank on Andover Street and then led police on a chase to Salisbury while driving drunk late Tuesday afternoon. The TD Bank was not the one on Main Street, as previously reported. Terry Woodard, 43, of Newport, Maine, is charged with robbery, operating under the influence of alcohol, failure to stop for police officer, operating to endanger, operating without a license, and possession of a class C substance. Class C generally means prescription medication, though it is not clear what kind Woodard had. BREAKING: Bank Robbery Leads to Highway Chase

The suspect has reportedly been arrested.

A man is in police custody after allegedly robbing TD Bank on Andover Street late Tuesday afternoon. At just after 5 p.m., North Andover Police received an alert that a man had robbed TD Bank and fled in his car. Local and state police pursued the suspect, and a state police chase northbound on I-495 led all the way to the Amesbury area, where the suspect was apprehended.
