North Andover Varsity Football Coach John Rafferty hasn't said much since being rehired last week. But Monday morning he published a letter of thank you to the community, posted on the Support Coach Rafferty Facebook page. Rafferty was fired in January, which ignited a groundswell of support for him in the community as well as outrage at school officials. Eventually, after two weeks of growing public pressure, Rafferty was rehired last week. Two weeks after being fired from his position as North Andover High School varsity football coach, it has been confirmed that John Rafferty is back at the high school. Principal Carla Scuzzarella made the announcement to her students late Thursday morning. Before doing so, she sat down for an interview to discuss the decision. "You make decisions all the time about what's a fit and what's not a fit, and after listening to my students, I have to put my money where my mouth is," Scuzzarella said. There are reports that the varsity football coach has been offered his job back.
After two weeks of public outcry and a rising movement of support, there are reports that recently-fired North Andover High School Varsity Football Coach John Rafferty has been offered his job back. The School Department has not confirmed this. But several sources in town have said the school is expected to send out a press release Thursday announcing the decision to bring Rafferty back. The Eagle-Tribune is reporting this as well. Rafferty was fired in late January without explanation from school officials. Rafferty reportedly told The Eagle-Tribune that it was because he disciplined two students without following protocol. North Andover High School Football Coach John Rafferty was told last week that he was being let go after 12 years with the Scarlet Knights. And his supporters are not sitting back quietly. There is now a Support Coach Rafferty Facebook page. The page already has hundreds of "likes" and is assertively pushing for action on behalf of Rafferty. The page even lists the contact information for Athletics Director Jon Longley and Principal Carla Scuzzarella. "What a bad example to set for the school, student and town," one of the page's status updates reads. "This is what's wrong with society...fire a coach who disciplines players who get in trouble." North Andover High School Football Coach John Rafferty has reportedly been fired. The Eagle-Tribune is reporting that Rafferty was told byschool officials that he would no longer be employed with the school. School administration officials did not return request for comment, but Rafferty told the Eagle-Tribune he was let go because "he didn’t follow proper protocol in two separate disciplinary incidents this past fall..."
