The House chose not to bring a relief bill to the floor for a vote.
Congress managed to approve a deal that prevented the fiscal cliff, but it still has not passed a bill granting aid to the victims of Hurricane Sandy nearly 70 days after the storm. Amid a firestorm of anger, including harsh words from governors of New York and New Jersey, the House is expected to hold a vote for some of the relief Friday and wait until later this month for the rest. The Senate has already passed a bill for Sandy relief, but the House decided not to have a vote on it during this legislative session. Some of the biggest names in music take the stage at Madison Square Garden for the live 12-12-12 concert for Sandy relief. While thousands of people fill the arena, billions are watching live on a variety of screens worldwide. The concert is streaming live on television networks (including HBO and AMC), movie theater screens and on the Internet, including right here on North Andover Patch. The school teamed up with two local businesses to get supplies to New York.
North Andover has stepped up to the plate to help those impacted by Hurricane Sandy. And the families of Sargent Elementary School chipped in their efforts as well. The school recently teamed up with local UPS store owner Mike Baumert and Rocky's Ace Hardware to get Sandy victims things they needed. Staten Island, N.Y., native and North Andover resident Erica Guagenti, who has a child who attends Sargent, contacted authorities to determine what supplies were needed and where. Then, the students brought in the requested items, such as toiletries and cleaning products. Some of the biggest names in music will play at a benefit concert on Wednesday. All proceeds will go to Hurricane Sandy victims, via the Robin Hood Foundation.
Huge names in music are lending their talents to Hurricane Sandy relief efforts at the “12-12-12” concert on Wednesday, Dec. 12. Every penny sold from ticket sales will go directly to Sandy victims through the Robin Hood Relief Fund, which provides material, money and aid to local organizations that are serving families and individuals in the regions hardest hit by the storm, including over 200 Patch towns in New Jersey, Connecticut and Long Island. Before Hurricane Sandy's full scope of devastation in New York and New Jersey was even known, 25 men and women from the Massachusetts State Police were on their way to assist those who had been displaced from their homes. "When I reached out to ask if the state police would be willing to field a group of 25 people, I already knew the answer," Undersecretary for Homeland Security and Director of MEMA, Kurt Schwartz said in a press conference in Framingham Monday afternoon. North Andover residents sent a whole truck full of stuff down to help the hurricane victims.
Recently, the owners of Turtle Lane Maple Farm were collecting donations of supplies for delivery to victims of Hurricane Sandy in Bell Harbor, N.Y. And boy, did the community respond. On Friday, Boulanger and Gallagher loaded a huge truck on Turtle Lane with everything from cleaning supplies to clothing and pet goods. People had been dropping stuff off there all week, and the front porch was now covered in donations. "This isn't all of it," Boulanger said as they prepared to load the bags and boxes onto the truck. "We're going to a restaurant on the way down called Dylan's, they're having an event to collect stuff there. Lyndsay Dowd of North Andover, originally from New York, watched the coverage of Hurricane Sandy and felt she needed to do something. So she is. "Sure I could give money, and I did, but that wasn't enough," Dowd said. "So I started a donation drive between my friends and neighbors." Dowd's donation drive accumulated more than 60 bags of clothing, blankets, diapers, toys, kids clothes, coats, water, batteries, toiletries and more in just a couple days. And her drive is still at it. But figuring out how to get all that stuff down to the impacted region was a challenge. It's been said it's far better to have a neighbor who's near, than a brother who's far away, but in the wake of Hurricane Sandy, Americans across the nation have proven to be the best neighbors and the strongest of families. This past weekend, AOL and Patch employees took an opportunity to pitch in, packing two tractor trailers worth of food, water and supplies in Dulles, Va., and Baltimore. For much of the past week, Hurricane Sandy dominated the region's media coverage. Did it feel worse or not quite as bad as last year's storm?
Much of the Northeastern United States slowed down on Monday to watch Hurricane Sandy make its way up the coast toward its eventual landfall on New England. Throughout the day, residents of North Andover and elsewhere endured high winds and power outages and in some cases, downed trees and wires. The storm came a year after the so-called "Snowtober" storm left many Massachusetts communities without power. So which storm do you think was worse – Sandy or Snowtober? These people were living on very desirable and insured high-priced ocean beach property and many with cradled yachts nearby.
