Harold Dushame Memorial Planned

Donations are being collected to honor the late Lt. Col. Dushame and his service to North Andover.

Residents who visited Town Hall in recent years were often compelled to smile because of Harold "Dutch" Dushame, the nice knowledgeable gentleman who worked in the Town Clerk's office before he passed away this year. But Dushame was more than just a friendly face downtown. He was a veteran of the Air Force and served for two decades in the military, including two tours in Vietnam, before retiring with the rank of a liuetenant colonel. After his military career, he served the town in many volunteer capacities until he passed away this year. So the Patriotic Observance Committee has announced plans to memorialize Harold Dushame's service with a granite bench with his name engraved on it, to be placed it front of Town Hall. The Lt. 'Dutch' Dushame: A Life of Giving

Dushame is remembered by the town he served throughout his life.

In the past several years, if you've gone to the Town Clerk's office, you may have been greeted by a gentle older man who spoke with ease and seemed to know the answer to your question before you even finished asking it. This week, that gentle voice went to rest. Harold "Dutch" Dushame passed away last weekend at Merrimack Valley Hospital at the age of 83. Dushame showed that not only can someone be a "townie" and still lead a fascinating life -- often, someone's life is made fascinating by their devotion to their town. Dushame  raised in North Andover, in a house on Saltonstall Street, and graduated from Johnson High School in North Andover in 1947 before earning his bachelor's degree at Union College in Kentucky. Mofford - I remember Harold well from the years I worked at Stevens Memorial Library as part-time reference librarian and through his commitment to the North Andover Historical Society and his rich knowledge of North Andover history.
