The event will allow residents to ask candidates questions.
North Andover's local election is March 26, and the League of Women Voters will have a Candidates' Night on March 6 in the Board of Selectmen meeting room at Town Hall. This will give members of the community a chance top engage with candidates, asking questions about where candidates stand on the issues and what they will pursue if they win. This year, there is only one contested race -- the race for a School Committee seat. Incumbant Chris Allen chose not to run for reelection. The candidates are Mark Mezzina and Zora Warren. A guide to the March 26 election.
Deadlines have passed for taking out nomination papers, and the candidate list for the March 26 local election is out. And what a short list it is. Selectman Rosemary Smedile will run for reelection unopposed. Smedile, who has served on the Board of Selectmen for 12 years, runs her family's real estate business, Connelly Real Estate Inc. She also serves as chair of the North Andover Town Republican Committee. Mary Beth Soucy is running for the North Andover Housing Authority, unopposed as well. The only campagn with an actual race will be that of the School Committee. The School Committee candidate is ready to campaign.
North Andover's local election is starting to take shape, and another candidate has turned in nomination papers for School Committee. Zora Warren is running for the seat, currently held by Chris Allen. Allen has announced that she will not run again. "My motivation is really just the success of our schools," Warren said. She currently has a daughter in second grade and another in kindergarten. Warren, a North Andover resident for the past 10 years, will bring an extensive educational resume to the race. She's a former teacher, having taught social studiesat R.J. Grey Junior High School in Acton and Groton-Dunstable Regional Middle School in Groton. The School Committee chair is stepping aside.
School Committee Chair Chris Allen has announced that she will not run for reelection this year. Allen, who is serving her second term on the committee, said she wants to give someone new a chance to serve. "I think for any elected official, two terms is plenty," Allen said. "It's time to give somebody else a chance. You know, it's a lot of hard work. Allen was elected to the committee in 2007 and has served during a time of budget cuts and standards-based education transitioning. "I no longer have children in the schools," she added. "I'm very interested in North Andover's schools, have been for many years, but I've always thought that at least most of the committee should have children in the school system." Local Democrats will be gathering at the Stevens Memorial Library for their annual caucus on Wednesday, February 13th. Hosted by the North Andover Democratic Town Committee, the annual caucus begins at 7:00pm and is to elect six men and six women to represent North Andover as delegates to the Massachusetts Democratic Party state convention in June. “Any Democrat living in North Andover, who was registered to vote by December 31st, can participate,” explained Phil DeCologero, a member of the Democratic State Committee. The Caucus doors will open for registration at 6:30pm, with the Caucus formally beginning at 7:00pm. School Committee candidate Mark Mezzina has collected and submitted his signatures, officially paving the way for him to be on the ballot in March. The 19-year-old recently moved home from South Carolina, where he had been attending college, and worked for Karin Rhoton's campaign for state representative. Thinking of jumping into local election?
Local election season has begun. And if you're considering a run for a seat, you may want to get a prep course. The town clerks of North Andover and Andover, along with the League of Women Voters, will host their annual Running For Office Seminar tonight at 7 p.m. at Memorial Hall Library, 2 North Main St., Andover. Guest Jason Tait from the Office of Campaign and Political Finance will present and answer questions. Elected officials from each Town will also be there to offer their input.
