VIDEO: Torrisi's 'Thank You'

The former state representative was given tribute this weekend.

As Democrats gathered Sunday for their annual Scholarship Breakfast, they paid tribute to former State Rep. David Torrisi. This year's breakfast included a special moment when DiSalvo invited former State Representative David Torrisi to join him at the front of the room. "The verdict of the voters is not the only one that counts," emcee Mark DiSalvo said as he invited Torrisi to the front of the room. "The verdict that matters is doing what is right – advocating for that which is in your soul. David Torrisi passed that test every day while serving his district selflessly for 14 years in Boston -doing what is needed and sometimes courageously, not what is politic." Torrisi has served the town -- in local and state offices -- for 17 years. …

Torrisi: 'It's Not the End of the World' [VIDEO]

David Torrisi was defeated in the Democratic Primary Thursday.

In a night full of surprises, State Rep. David Torrisi was defeated in the Democratic Primary by Methuen's Diana DiZoglio Thursday night. Torrisi addressed his supporters at Jaime's after the polls closed. "You guys put your heart and soul into the campaign, and in a lot of ways, obviously I'm responsible and I feel I let you guys down," Torrisi said, with his family at his side. "But honestly, it's not the end of the world. Honestly, I've never been in a better place personally, with this family... I love my job, I never needed the job, I did it because I loved it, and it never defined who I was as a person." His wife Sarah and their two children are what define him, Torrisi said. Torrisi, 43, has served in the House since 1999 and has …

BREAKING: Dizoglio Defeats Torrisi

Essex 14th District seat primary results.

Incumbent State Rep. David Torrisi of North Andover has been defeated by challenger Diana DiZoglio of Methuen in the Democratic Primary. DiZoglio garnered about 1,600 votes, and Torrisi got 1,435. This primary race had emerged as a heated one, as unions began endorsing DiZoglio and DiZoglio signs started popping up on lawns across the Essex 14th District. Torrisi won in North Andover but his local lead was not enough to offset defeats in other communities in the district. North Andover was the only community in which Torrisi won. DiZoglio will now go on to face Republican Karin Rhoton in the general election for the seat. Check back with Patch in the morning for more details. UPDATE: An earlier version of this story reported that the vote …

Tsongas Endorses Torrisi

The congresswoman joined several local officials to show her support.

As voters prepare to select party nominees in Thursday's primary, State Rep. David Torrisi has picked up high profile support for his campaign in the Essex 14th House District. Supporters gathered at Methuen City Hall Tuesday morning as Congresswoman Niki Tsongas formally endorsed Torrisi for reelection. "I’ve been very fortunate to work closely with David on many projects including the Mann Orchard’s solar array,” Tsongas said. “David’s roots in the Merrimack Valley are deep and it shows in his dedication to the work he does both in the Statehouse and in the community. He is a powerful advocate for the Merrimack Valley, securing critically needed dollars to fund schools, police and fire departments, libraries and other integral town and …

Letter to the Editor: Torrisi Works

The following was submitted by Mark S. DiSalvo.

I’ve heard some ask “Where is David Torrisi?” I’ve observed him for more than a decade and I thought I’d answer that question. One word: WORKING.  He’s been diligently working for you.  Politicians are slotted into one of two camps - work horses or show horses.  David is a work horse. In the institution of the House he is known as a guy who labors hard for his constituents and on policy issues, knows the institution and the players, gets things done and is honorable - sometimes to a fault. Some politicians are particularly good at telling you what they hope to do, expect to do, or are keen on blasting those who accomplish things. Dave is not one of those. He actually gets things done. Some examples of what he accomplished we should never …

Letter to the Editor: Supporting David Torrisi

The following was submitted by Terry Holland.

With the Democratic Primary quickly approaching on Thursday September 6, I would like to express my support for David Torrisi. My name is Terry Holland. I have lived in North Andover all my life. I have run a small business in both Salem, N.H., and in North Andover, had the privilege to serve on a number of boards in town as well as to be actively involved in helping raise money for many worthwhile programs in town. Over the many years during my community involvement in North Andover, David has been a real champion for small businesses, our youth programs and a supporter of the good work that has been done by the Community Preservation Act (CPA) projects.  I hope you join me in lending your support to David Torrisi as our Democratic …

Letter to the Editor: Supporting Torrisi For Gay Rights

The following was submitted by Jordan Burgess.

In our country, society, and culture, it seems as if political discourse always revolves around how people should or shouldn’t act.  Sometimes the discussion is about women, other times immigrants or minorities. Several years ago Massachusetts legalized gay marriage and took this issue, and homosexuality in general, and inserted it directly into the national political debate.  Gay rights had been something people had been fighting decades for, but in 2004 Massachusetts blazed a new trail in the pursuit of equal rights for all citizens. Many may not remember how intense the debate was over whether or not we should extend this civil right to the gay community. But as an active member of my church, I saw first-hand the pressure placed on …

The winner will be decided on Sept. 6, and that person will go on to face Republican Karin Rhoton in November. So we want know, you Democrats and Independents planning on voting in the Democratic primary, who is your pick at this point?

Letter to the Editor: Supporting Rep. Torrisi

The following was submitted by Karen Trowbridge.

To the Editor, All political leaders try to distance themselves from the corruption that is so much a part of politics today, but not many of them actually stand up to it. That’s what makes State Representative David Torrisi such an exceptional leader. Here in Massachusetts we have seen corruption up-close with a trio of House Speakers who abused their positions. Their actions helped to undermine the efforts of those who are truly working for the good of our state. In 2009, the Merrimack Valley saw one of those hardworking officials stand out from the crowd, Representative David Torrisi. That year, Torrisi was the first person in the House of Representatives to stand up against corrupt Speaker Sal Dimasi, demanding he step aside. It was a …

For the record - Torrisi lost the North Andover portion of the election by 439 votes (3556 for, 4005 against). He won 47% of the North Andover vote. Torrisi won the election by 621 votes (6171 for, 5550 against - winning 53%). "Losing handily" and a "smackdown" don't have defined percentages as far as I can tell. Torrisi lost North Andover by much more than a few votes (439) but its wasn't a …   more ›

Torrisi Votes to Override Veto on Vehicle Registration Bill

The following was submitted by State Rep. David Torrisi.

State Representative David Torrisi (D-North Andover) joined his colleagues this week in the House and Senate in overriding the Governor’s veto of a bill that would require vehicle registration applicants to show proof of legal residency. The language included in the FY 2013 budget would prohibit X-registrations, which have allowed car owners to register their vehicles without a license since 1970. Applicants looking to register a motor vehicle must now provide a driver’s license or some other “proof of legal residence”. In addition, the language that has been adopted would increase fines for knowingly employing unlicensed drivers or allowing an unlicensed driver to drive, as well as raises the fine for a first offense from $500 to $1,000…
