Tarr, Winslow Considering Runs for U.S. Senate

Money will play a key role in race that’s right around the corner.

OUTSIDE BOSTON, MA -- Republicans continue to come forward exploring the possibility of running for the U.S. Senate seat left vacant by the appointment of John Kerry to Secretary of State, but so far only one has officially announced a run. With just 21 days until nomination papers have to be filed, two more Republicans announced on Tuesday that they were exploring their options – State Rep. Dan Winslow (R-Norfolk) and Senate Minority Leader Bruce Tarr (R-Gloucester). Also in the mix: Former Nantucket selectman and county commissioner Douglas Bennett says he’s making a bid for the seat. And according to the Boston Globe, former Navy Seal Gabriel Gomez, of Cohassett is considering a run. Several Republicans have already been down this path …

Senator Bruce Tarr Plans Comprehensive Sex Offender Legislation

Mass. Senate Republican Leader Bruce Tarr plans to introduce legislation in January.

Senate Republicans expect to file comprehensive legislation during the new session aimed at reforming how information about sex offenders is shared between law enforcement and other officials. The bill is a response to the ongoing case involving Wakefield resident John Burbine and some 100 counts of child sex abuse he is facing. His wife, Marian, is also facing charges in the case for running an illegal daycare and for reckless endangerment. Burbine’s original classification suggested his risk of re-offense was low, and the public would not benefit from the disclosure of his information; however, subsequent facts have proven this assessment was inadequate and needed to be adjusted accordingly.  Since 1989, Burbine has been the subject of …

Adopt a Chinese baby and name it Ezekiel .. it's the American way. Can Bruce even spell "Joseph Aloisius Ratzinger" and include him in his comprehensive bill? This leering old villain in a frock and former head of the Inquisition should be arrested the moment he dares to set foot outside his tinpot fiefdom of the Vatican, and he should be tried in an appropriate civil - not ecclesiastical - court…   more ›

Court Strikes Down Portion of Drunk Driving Law

Sen. Bruce Tarr called court's decision “deeply concerning and undermines the effectiveness of a major law that protects our public safety.”

The state Supreme Judicial Court on Thursday removed a portion of a law that targeted drunk driving, known as Melanie’s Law. The court Thursday disallowed the portion of the law that allows the Registry of Motor Vehicles to increase sanctions against those who admit to driving drunk, but whose cases are later dismissed, reported the Boston Globe. The issue is that when lawmakers changed the state’s drunk driving law, they did not change what a “conviction” means. Supreme Judicial Court Justice Margot Botsford wrote in the unanimous decision that the law did not “explicity include cases that are ‘continued without a finding’ in its list of what can be considered drunk driving convictions,” reported the Globe. The court decision did not …

Senate Minority Leader Bruce Tarr and State Rep. James E. Vallee announced they will be filing legislation requiring the Registry of Motor Vehicles to provide special active duty license plates to Massachusetts residents currently serving in the U.S. armed forces. The proposal would allow full-time active duty military personnel serving in the U.S. Army, Navy, Marine Corps, Coast Guard or Air Force to request a distinctive emblem from the RMV designating their branch of service. The emblems – which would be subject to a fee of not more than $35 to cover production costs – would be designed to be affixed to the license plates of private passenger motor vehicles and motorcycles. “Our state has always had a strong legacy of men and women …

Letter to the Editor: Senator Tarr’s Statement on Municipal Health Care Reform

The following was submitted by the office of State Sen. Bruce Tarr.

Senate Minority Leader Bruce Tarr released the following statement today regarding the municipal health care reform proposal that was included in the Fiscal Year 2012 Conference Committee budget: “There has been speculation Governor Patrick may make changes to the municipal health care reform proposal the Legislature sent to his desk last week. My advice to the Governor is that he should not do anything that will harm municipalities’ ability to save money that can be used for local priorities, including retaining police, firefighters and teachers. "Should the Governor attempt to effect any changes, it is important that the Legislature act swiftly and decisively to protect the character and effectiveness of the reforms that the House and …

The changes in municipal health insurance represent a major step forward for communities that have been struggling with rising premium costs, while the funding increases in special education and regional school transportation will provide much-needed relief to local school districts.  We also seek to hold local aid harmless by requiring that a percentage of the…
