School's almost back in session, but were you aware of these state laws on school buses?
School starts this week in North Andover. Most students know the "Rules of the Bus," but here are a few Massachusetts' state laws about school buses you might not have known. #1. Everyone knows to stop when a school bus is loading and unloading passengers, but what you may not know is that if you don’t stop, you could get a ticket of up to $250. That fine can go up to $2,000 and a suspended license of up to a year for subsequent offenses (MGL 90-14) #2. Oh, speaking of stopping behind a stopped bus, even fire trucks, police cars and ambulances with their sirens on have to stop until the passengers have been loaded or unloaded. (MGL 89-7B) #3. Tell your kids to sit down, because bus drivers can be fined up to $500 if they drive the bus …

What advice do you have to offer?
September is creeping in. And for a lot of recent high school graduates, that means starting college. College can be a thrilling, scary and exciting time for incoming freshmen. It can also be overwhelming. Think back to your college beginnings and what you wish you'd learned, or what you did learn and would like to pass along to the new generation. What advice do you have for college freshmen this week? Leave a comment and discuss.
The new superintendent sat down with Patch for a live chat.
North Andover Superintendent Dr. Kavin Hutchinson joined us for a live chat Thursday. You can read the full transcript here. The issue most discussed was standards-based grading, a new system of evaluating students which North Andover Middle School is transitioning into this year. Here are some of the highlights: Patch.com: Can you tell us what standards-based grading is? Kevin Hutchinson: Standards-based grading is a system that reflects what the essential standards are and how students are progressing to meet those standards. For example, if our essential writing standards are written to reflect the Six Traits of writing, one of which is Organization, then the report card will reflect how a student is progressing in the "organization" …

Reporting progress will soon be standards-based.
North Andover Middle School is planning to transition to standards-based education. School-wide implementation is planned for the 2013-2014 school year, but the transition wis starting already. According to the school Web site: "The purpose of this reporting system is to communicate with parents and students about progress towards mastery of specific learning standards. This reporting system identifies students’ levels of achievement with regard to those standards, areas of strength, and areas where additional time and/or relearning opportunities are needed." A standards-based system is one in which, instead of the traditional A-F grading system, teachers report progress in detailed analysis of what a child has learned relating to state …

Take a trip down memory lane.
The kids are starting school soon. So we thought it would be fun to ask what your memorable first school days were? First day of high school? First day of seventh grade? What made first school days memorable then? The smell of the air becoming crisp? Your new school clothes? Seeing all your friends and other kids you haven't seen? Meeting your new teachers and comparing class schedules with friends? And of course, what are some funny anecdotes you'd like to share? Discuss in the comments below.

It's that time of year again.
The kids will start school again in just a couple of weeks. We at Patch love local businesses, so we're wondering what you business owners have going on for back-to-school. A sale, a special on haircuts? Cool new clothes in stock? Let us know in the comments! So far we know that Kohl's is having sales on everything from backbacks to jeans. And Staples is having a huge sale on laptops.
