Jessica Whitehead is making strides.
North Andover High School senior Jessica Whitehead represented North Andover and Massachusetts in the Senior Showcase Invitational in Fort Myers, Fla., recently. And Team Massachusetts won the national title, defeating Illinois with Whitehead competing on floor and vault. You may recognize Whitehead from our Athlete of the Week series a couple years ago. Check out that video here. Team Massachusetts dedicated their meet to the Boston Marathon victims and survivors and raised funds that for the One Fund.

The matter will be decided at Town Meeting.
A "cafegymatorium" might sound cool to many peope, but not to the students and staff at one local school. Kittredge Elementary School is the only school in North Andover without a gym. But Town Manager Andrew Maylor is hoping to change that at Town Meeting. Maylor's capital improvement plan requests the construction of a new gym for the school, to be built alongside the modular classroom buildings built three years ago. "Currently students use the multipurpose 'cafegymatorium' when that small space is available or outside," Superintendent Kevin Hutchinson said. After last month's Boston Marathon bombing, school officials aren't taking any chances.
North Shore colleges and high schools will increase security for graduation ceremonies due to the Boston Marathon bombing, the Salem News is reporting. Many schools, like Salem State University and Gordon College, will have bag searches and increased number of security personnel. On April 15, two bombs were detonated at the Boston Marathon, killing three people and injuring more than 170 others. Since then, security has been a concern at large events in the Boston area. "There will be a lot of eyes around. We will all be aware and watching what will be going on around us," Joanne Waldner, assistant to the president at Endicott College, told the Salem News. The magazine surveyed thousands of high schools nationwide.
Newsweek has ranked the high schools nationally, but North Andover High School's not on it. "I'm not aware of any survey nor have we ever been requested to complete one, based on the collective knowledge of this office," Superintendent Kevin Hutchinson said. This isn't the first time the Scarlet Knights have been snubbed by a magaine ranking list. The high school didn't rank in the top 500 nationally or in the state at all in a silimar ranking by US News, nor did the district rank in Boston Magazine's list. For its rankings, Newsweek sent out a survey to more than 5,000 high schools in the U.S., with about 2,500 schools responding in 2013. On Sunday, April 28th, the 5th grade class of 2013 got together to support local charities. Students from Atkinson, Franklin, Kittredge, Thomson and Sargent Schools all came together at the North Andover Middle School, (NAMS) to carry out a community service project. Food, clothing and items for the North Andover Youth Center were collected. People were able to drop off their donated items at NAMS all day Sunday. Students met people at their cars, collected donated items and carried them into the cafeteria for sorting. Once in the cafeteria, students sorted items by charity, but also sorted clothing by size, separating children’s clothing from adult clothing. Student also collected change for the One Fund, the charity set up to help the …

Many of you may have been in her math class.
Retired North Andover Middle School teacher Mary Lou Lynch was inducted into the North Andover Educator Hall of Fame Wednesday. At a ceremony held at the middle school hosted by the Middle School Parent Teacher Organization, Lynch was honored and praised by peers and former students. Lynch taught mathematics for 20 years at the middle school. Her students went on to have children who were also in Lynch's class. After she retired, Lynch continued educating kids as a volunteer math tutor at the Thomson Elementary School. Check out these photos School Committee member Stan Limpert submitted.
Music and a spring clean for a good local cause.
Friday night, you can enjoy the energizing sounds of jazz at North Andover High School, and Saturday you can help out a local music program while having your car washed. Jazz Knights is a jazz performance featuring the North Andover Middle and North Andover High School Jazz Ensembles along with the All Star Big Band. The event, free and open to the public and sponsored by the North Andover Music Association, will be at 7 p.m. in the North Andover High School Cafeteria. On Saturday, starting at 8:30 p.m., the North Andover Music Association will have a car wash in the North Andover Middle School driveway. There's no set price for a car wash, it's however much you want to donate.

Mary Lou Lynch, retired Middle School mathematics teacher, will be the next inductee into the North Andover Educator Hall of Fame. The ceremony will be held at the North Andover Middle School on May 1, 2013, at 11:30 a.m. in the cafeteria as part of a teacher appreciation luncheon being hosted by the Middle School Parent Teacher Organization. Ms. Lynch taught mathematics for 20 years at the North Andover Middle School, including parents and their own children. Ms. Lynch was much appreciated as a gentle and patient teacher, who always got the best from her students. She made math fun for her students, and got students excited about learning. Following her retirement, Ms. Lynch returned to the North Andover schools as a volunteer math tutor…

North Andover school officials are using caution with discussing the Boston Marathon bombings.
As North Andover students return to school from April vacation, school officials have put a plan in place to help students cope with the Boston Marathon tragedy. "The unfortunate and saddening events of this past week have impacted us all in various ways," Superintendent Kevin Hutchinson wrote in a letter to parents and staff. "Many have been personally affected, and all of us share a common angst when such tragedy strikes so close to home." Staff members have been given guidelines to follow when addressing the topic with students. "Additionally, if you feel your child is experiencing particular difficulty, please contact a building administrator or guidance counselor so that we can attend to supporting your child," Hutchinson wrote. The North Andover Schools Enrichment Council recently had a "Techsploration" presentation to 5th Graders at Franklin School. Founder, Tom Wahle, uses a hot air balloon, among many other exciting props to present a hands-on experience about "Ways to Keep Things Moving". The students also had an opportunity to build their own magnetic cars and see how their designs operated on a magnetic track.
