Michael J. Latta EMS Scholarship Fund to Host Blood Drive

The following was submitted by the Michael J. Latta Scholarship Fund.

The Michael J. Latta EMS Scholarship Fund is getting ready to host its fourth annual blood drive later this month in memory of Michael Latta, an EMT who dreamed of becoming a paramedic and EMT instructor.

Michael, of North Andover, passed away in 2007 at the age of 21.

Last year, donors at the blood drive gave a total of 54 units of blood. Michael’s mother, Linda Latta, is hoping to build on that success this year.

“Michael’s passion for helping people inspired us to host a blood drive in his memory,” said Linda, who now lives in Atkinson, N.H. “He’d be so proud to see how many friends and family contribute to this event.”

The blood drive will be held Saturday, Oct. 15, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Whittier Rehabilitation Hospital, 145 Ward Hill Ave., Bradford.

Interested donors can either drop by Whittier Rehabilitation Hospital any time during the event, or make an appointment to donate at www.redcrossblood.org or call 1-800-RED-CROSS.

In addition to the annual blood drive, the Michael J. Latta EMS Scholarship Foundation awards annual grant scholarships to individuals who emulate Michael’s character traits of work ethic, dedication, energy and enthusiasm, and who are seeking careers in emergency medical services.

“Michael touched and inspired so many people through his perseverance, vision, dedication and intense work ethic,” said Linda. “We established this scholarship fund to provide financial support to EMTs who want to become paramedics. In this way, Michael can continue his goal of helping others even after his death.”
