For the People - By the People

People's Pantry at the North Parish fights hunger.

The persistent issue of hunger is undeniably present in our world, countries and towns. While some in North Andover might not see or feel the pain of hunger, it is something that exists close by and within town lines.

Inescapable for many, the fight against hunger is being fought locally at People’s Pantry.

The People’s Pantry was founded in 1992 by Cari Marchese who, along with two friends, voluntarily took action in response to the struggling economy.  They never imagined the growing need would continue for so long.

“The need for a pantry could happen to anybody even though you may not realize it,” Marchese said. “It’s within the realm of possibility, the way things are in the world.”

Now, almost 20 years later, the pantry continues to serve the community and its guests every other week. Over 30 volunteers now dedicate their time and energy to this worthwhile cause.

Marchese has always had a giving heart. She had volunteered at food pantries in the past and used that experience to make the People’s Pantry something positive and special for its patrons. She also voluntarily runs the North Andover Thrift Shop.

“The pantry is very near and dear to my heart.” said Marchese.

At the pantry, Marchese has instituted an efficient system which allows guests to feel welcomed and comfortable.

Doors open on alternate Tuesday mornings at 9:30 a.m. Each guest is greeted by a member of the welcoming committee and given a numbered card to allow for an orderly flow into the grocery selection area. While they wait, guests are offered refreshments and young children are entertained by a dedicated volunteer at the children’s table.

The ultimate objective at People’s Pantry is to promote respect and nutritious foods. Marchese and her team put together a complete menu with items from all of the food groups. On Aug. 16, a total of 109 guests had visited the pantry and were able to partake of a menu which included: American cheese, tuna, peanut butter, rice, cereal, canned fruits, fresh produce, bakery items and more.

The People’s Pantry is a member of the Merrimack Valley Food Bank and greatly benefits from the foods that the food bank provides.  However they do welcome donations from the public, but respectfully ask that donated items be checked for expiration and are unopened.

A grocery donation box is located at the North Andover Stop & Shop or you may also drop items directly to the pantry at the Old Center Hall office from Tuesday to Friday 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Currently, the pantry is specifically in need of cooking oil, bottled salad dressing, hot chocolate, bars of soap and any other personal care items.

There is always a way to help and even the youngest members of our community can find a way to make a difference. The local Andover and North Andover Girls Scouts, for example, have been providing all of the pantry’s baby food needs for years.

However large or small your ability to help may be, it is always appreciated.  Donations go directly to foods or holiday gifts for pantry guests.

“We don’t have any paid staff, therefore it’s a very good place to donate because it all goes for the need,” Marchese said. “No one is paid, we don’t have rent, we don’t have utility costs.

The People’s Pantry is located at the North Parish, 190 Academy Road, 978-687-7984. Monetary donations are greatly appreciated and allow for additions to the pantry offering including: personal care items and seasonal extras for Thanksgiving, Christmas and Easter.

Donations may be mailed to: The People’s Pantry, c/o North Parish Church, 3 Great Pond Road, North Andover, MA 01845.
