Curves of North Andover Raises Almost $1,500 for Breast Cancer Organizations

Curves of North Andover spent much of October -- Breast Cancer Awareness Month -- raising money for the American Cancer Society and Susan G. Komen for the Cure.

It might have been cold and stormy outside, but the heat that was generated inside was electrifying.

On Saturday, Oct. 29, more than 40 people braved the "Halloween nor'easter" to join several local Zumba instructors for a "Party in Pink" Zumbathon at North Andover Curves, raising money for breast cancer research, education and awareness.

The Zumbathon was one of a number of fund-raising events held at North Andover Curves throughout October. In total, the club raised $1,460 for both Susan G. Komen and the American Cancer Society, exceeding its goal by almost 50 percent.

"“We were honored to partner with Zumba Fitness to raise funds for this disease that affects so many women, and their families,” said Laura McKellar, co-owner of Curves of North Andover. "So many people are touched by breast cancer in some way, and this was a great opportunity for us to come together as a community and do something about it."

Exercise is increasingly becoming recognized as a way to improve the prognosis and quality of life for breast cancer survivors, McKellar said.

"In addition to the many positive physical advantages of exercise," she said, "the emotional benefits one can garner can do wonders for those suffering from this disease and others."

Local Zumba teachers who donated their time to the event included Jennifer Klein-Roche, Susan Tribble, Mary Russo, Tallie Veras Abernathy, and Kathleen Godoy. In addition, North Andover businesses who donated to raffles included Sense of Wonder, McAloon's Liquors, Rose and Dove, and Shadi's Restaurant.

Curves’ exercise program consists of thirty minutes of exercise three times a week, during which participants work all major muscle groups and receive a great cardio workout. In addition, Curves of North Andover has CurvesSmart, a personal coaching system pioneered by Curves that offers a precision-designed workout, moment-to-moment feedback and progress reports to keep members motivated while they work out.
