Marotta Named Defensive Player of the Week, Hockey Ranked 17th Nationally

Merrimack College's Sam Marotta of Bridgewater was named the Hockey East Defensive Player of the Week as first-place Merrimack moved to 17th in the national rankings.

Marotta stopped 39 of 40 shots in Friday’s 2-1 win over #4 Boston College before turning aside 24 shots in a 2-2 tie with Providence. The junior leads Hockey East in goals-against and save percentage and has a 1.16 goals-against and a .963 save percentage in his last five starts, going 4-0-1.

It marked the fifth time the junior goaltender has earned Hockey East weekly honors this season.

Merrimack was also named the Hockey East Team of the Week for the fourth time after earning a win and a tie and moving into first place in Hockey East for the first time ever this late in the season.

 With a 7-1-2 record in its last ten games, Merrimack moved up to 17th in the national rankings.
