NAHS Volleyball Captain Controversy Goes Viral

The story is igniting outrage locally and elsewhere.

North Andover school officials are keeping quiet about the controversy surrounding a North Andover High School volleyball captain's punishment essentially for going to a party to pick up a friend.

But that isn't stopping the story from exploding on the web.

Erin Cox, 17, went to a party in Boxford to pick up her friend, and the police reportedly arrived and arrested underage drinkers. Cox was summonsed for being at the party, but Boxford Police have confirmed that she was not drinking.

Cox was stripped of her title as captain of the North Andover High School Girls Volleyball team. She's been suspended for five games as well.

Her family attempted to file suit to block the suspension, but that attempt was knocked down by the courts.

A petition on Change.org -- posted by a woman named Cheresa Reynolds from Kentucky -- calls on North Andover Superintendent Kevin Hutchinson to have Cox reinstated as team captain.

"North Andover High School, in making an example of Cox, risks suggesting to its student body that being a designated driver is the wrong choice-- despite countless academic studies showing the extent to which this behavior saves lives," the petition reads.

The comments in support of the petition come from as far away as Louisiana and Toronto.

The issue was discussed on Fox & Friends Tuesday morning. And CBS News. And ESPN. And Reddit. And the United Kingdom's Daily Mail.

And there's even a fundraiser on GoFundMe to raise money for Cox, with a goal of $10,000.
