Five Things You May Not Know About the NAHS Summer Music Program

The sounds of summer include music by the town's talented youth.

You may not think of school-related events when you think of summer, but this summer you'd be surprised how active one school group is, providing free entertainment to the town with music.

North Andover High School Summer Music program offers a variety of events and programs.

Here are several things you may not know about North Andover High School Summer Music program:

  • On Thursday, Aug. 1, the group will host "Coffee House on the Common." This event will feature NAHS students' vocal and instrumental performances. The event is free, and donations in support of NAHS music program are welcome.

  • NAHS returning drum major Kevin Varga, who will perform at the Coffee House on Aug. 1, recently presented a proposal under consideration by North Andover Music Association for upgrading BATSOF Equipment for the music programs of NAHS.

  • Twelve NAHS music students received summer music scholarships from the North Andover Music Association.  They will participate in programs at such venues as UMass Lowell, UMass Amhearst, SYMS UNH, and Spartans Drum and Bugle Corps from Nashua, N.H., which will compete in the Drum Corps International World Class Finals at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis.

  • Every Monday and Thursday evening throughout the summer, the percussion section of the NAHS marching band practices at the high school from 6 to 8 p.m. under the direction of NAHS band alum TJ Kelly.

  • Band Camp meets daily the week of Aug. 12. The 12 hour days will conclude on Aug. 17 with BBQ for students and preview performance of this year's marching competition and football half-time show for parents and the community.
