Severe Storms Plow through Western New England

Large hail, damaging winds, and flash flooding affected the Northeast May 29, 2012.

Large hail, damaging winds, and flash flooding affected the Northeast May 29, 2012.

Strong thunderstorms made an appearance near Memorial Day once again this year. Severe weather this time of year is nothing new for the northeastern part of the country. Several historic outbreaks of severe weather, including tornadoes, have swarmed the region numerous times in past years.

The set up this time was typical. A hot and humid air mass was in place with a cold front approaching from the west. The Storm Prediction Center in Norman, OK issued severe thunderstorm and tornado watches across New York State, Vermont, New Hampshire, and western Massachusetts early afternoon on Tuesday.

While no tornadoes were confirmed, dozens of reports of damaging wind and large hail were reported across the region. New York State received reports of storms dropping hail the size of softballs, along with strong winds knocking down trees and power lines. Cheshire County, in southwest NH, experienced hail larger than golf balls and heavy rain that eventually led to flash flooding. Nearly seven inches of rain was reported in the town of Surry, NH.

Toward evening thunderstorms lost their intensity but still contained heavy rain and lightning as they pushed into eastern Massachusetts. At 9:30pm the final report of wind damage occurred in Worcester, MA. Soon after, residents in Boston and communities along the North Shore saw a quick round of thunderstorms before they made their way off shore around 11pm.
