Sierra Club Endorses Tierney

The environmental advocacy organization cited the congressman's commitment to environmental issues.

In the latest high-profile endorsement for Congressman John Tierney, the Sierra Club of Massachusetts has endorsed him for re-election.

The Sierra Club is one of the oldest environmental advocacy groups in the nation and cited Tierney's record on environmental issues and clean energy job creation as the main reason behind the endorsement.

“John Tierney is the only candidate in this race with a track record of supporting environmental safeguards and working to make America a leader in clean energy,"  Massachusetts Sierra Club Legislative Chair Phil Sego said in a statement announcing the endorsement. "Tierney’s opponent has taken money from Big Oil and has a lackluster record when it comes to protecting our environment. If elected, Richard Tisei would simply do the work of big polluters who have consistently relied on their allies in Congress to try and roll back critical environmental protections. We need an economy that’s built to last, based on clean energy and reinvigorated economy not one even more dependent on the fuels of the past. Sierra Club members understand that they have an ally in John Tierney and we look forward to giving him our full support in this campaign."

The Sierra Clu, like Tierney, supports tightening restrictions on offshore oil drilling and greenhouse gas emissions. The group plans to work with the Tierney campaign to get that message out to voters for the upcoming congressional election.

“I am honored to have the support of the Sierra Club and its members here in Massachusetts," Tierney said. "I have always fought to protect our environment and promote alternative energy. We must make sure that the US is the global leader in clean-technology, we cannot settle for second place when it comes to harnessing the power of green energy. I look forward to continuing my work with the Sierra Club to invest in green technology and create more green-collar jobs here in America."

Tierney's campaign has cited his support for the Green Jobs Act, the American Clean Energy and Security Act of 2009 and the clean energy provisions in the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act as examples of his pro-environment record.
