Bradstreet Offer a No-Go

Selectmen voted to reject the offer.

Bradstreet School is still standing -- for now, anyway.

Selectmen voted 4-1 last week to reject the offer submitted by developer Coalition For a Better Acre,

The proposal called for tearing down the school and building a three-story mixed-use building, with businesses on the ground floor and apartments on the other two floors. The town would have also had to pitch in more than $700,000 from the CPA fund or Affordable Housing Trust.

Selectman Tracy Watson gave the only vote in favor of the proposal, citing the expense to the town for maintaining the property as well as the shortage of interested buyers. The other selectmen said they wanted to see more retail space at that location, to bring in more business to the downtown area and collect more commercial tax revenue.

Residents have expressed concern about the increased traffic the proposal could bring as well as the potential burden on schools.

And the North Andover Historical Commission opposed the deal because it would demolish the school building.
