Theft Suspect Charged With Assaulting Police

The following information was supplied by the North Andover Police Department. Where arrests or charges are mentioned, it does not indicate a conviction.

An investigation into theft resulted in an assault on three police officers, police say.

On Monday night just after midnight, Officer Michael Reardon was downtown when he noticed a man behaving suspiciously on Main Street in front of Bank of America, North Andover Police Lt. Charles Gray said.

The subject -- Mark Myers, 29, 175 Main St., North Andover -- resembled a description of a suspect in recent car breaks, so Reardon approached him to investigate and saw Myers was holding items believed to have been stolen from cars nearby.

Officers Michael Gilligan and William Brush were called to the scene, and the man allegedly became violent.

"After investigation it was determined he had property that didn't belong to him," Gray said. "When Officer Reardon was going to place him under arrest, he assaulted all three officers."

Myers was charged with receiving stolen property, breaking into a motor vehicle and three counts of assault on a police officer.

Gray said the officers had only minor cuts and bruises.
