Second Snow Surge Spurs Commute Chaos

Be careful on your commute home.

The snowstorm started to wind down -- or appeared top, anyway -- late morning and early afternoon Tuesday, but then a second surge of snowfall sneaked in and caused several vehicle accidents.

North Andover Police Lt. Charles Gray said things weren't bad early in the day because most people were driving cautiously and the roads cleared up. But around 2:30 p.m., a second batch of snow moved into the area and caused hazardous driving conditions.

One accident happened near the Police Station, and another was on Waverly Road. Other areas, such as Route 114 and Route 125, saw mutliple minor accidents and cars off the road.

To make matters worse, Tuesday afternoon every stoplight on 114 from the North Andover Mall past Merrimack College was just blinking red, causing intersection chaos.

Drive with extreme caution on your commute home. And if you can, stay off the roads. Temperatures are expected to drop below freezing Tuesday night, meaning all that slush and new snow will turn to ice.
