North Andover Police Sgt. T.J. McEvoy, who served on the department for 30 years, passed away Thursday at his home. He was 60 years old.
"Sgt. McEvoy was an admired police officer, and it was very quiet at the station yesterday when we learned of his passing," North Andover Police Chief Paul Gallagher said. "We're going to miss him."
McEvoy and his brother John recently retired from the department. He continued on as a special officer, often seen on road details.
Even after McEvoy retired, he kept himself a presence in the community, seen all over town talking with business owners, helping with charitable events, eating lunch at Joe's Landing.
"He was a mentor, he was my sergeant when I started, he took me under his wing," Lt. Eric Foulds said. "He showed me that common sense went a long way in this department and dealing with the public... He truly is North Andover, and he truly represents the North Andover Police Department."
Calling hours will be Monday from 4 to 8 p.m. at St. Michael Parish. There will be a funeral Mass Tuesday at 11 a.m. at St. Michael Parish. Burial will be private.
