Police to Collect Prescriptions Again

After the success of the program last fall, the police will collect unused prescription drugs to keep them off the illegal drug market.

in cooperation with the Drug Enforcement Agency, will collect unused prescription medications on April 30 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The DEA and police teamed up in September for National Prescription Drug Take Back Day. That effort was a huge success, police said, so they decided to do it again this month.

According to a 2009 report by Mental Health Administration, more than 7 million Americans abuse prescription drugs, and every day about 2,500 teens prescription drugs to get high. Studies have shown that many people who abuse prescription drugs obtain them from family and friends.

During September's prescription drug collection, there were about 3,000 state and local law enforcement agencies participating nationwide, and nationwide more than 121 tons of pills were collected.

That success led officials to call for another prescription collection, and that will take place April 30. Residents can drop off their unwanted, unused prescription drugs at the North Andover Police Station, 1475 Osgood St., from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The program is anonymous and free of charge.
