Local Man Charged With Shoplifting in Woburn

Early rumors reported it was an armed robbery.

Kohl's in North Andover frequently reports shoplifters in that store from outside of town. This weekend, though, a North Andover resident allegedly went to another town to rob a Kohl's.

Shortly before 6 p.m. Saturday, Woburn Police were called regarding an alleged shoplifter at Kohl's in Woburn.

James P. Evans, 45, of 651 Turnpike St., North Andover, was arrested and charged with three counts of larceny over $250, possession of a burglarious tool (wire cutters), disorderly conduct and resisting arrest.

Officers were reportedly investigating a on Washington Street in Woburn, when Evans, matching the shoplifter’s description, exited the store. An officer called for Evans come over and speak to him, but Evans ran from the scene, said police.

According to police, Evans ran from pursuing officers and crossed six lanes of traffic on Washington Street on foot before running down Mishawum Road. A driver tried to stop Evans by striking him with a car door, but was unsuccessful, said police. An off-duty Winchester Police officer blocked Evans with his car and Evans was taken into custody.

Policesaid  Evans took several pieces of silver jewelry from the store, some of which was recovered outside. Evans is also a suspect in two other shoplifting incidents at Kohl’s.

After the incident Saturday, rumors spread on the Internet that it was an armed robbery.
