Car Strikes Tree and Sign at Old Common

The vehicle ended up in front of Fire Station 2.

A car struck a tree and a sign at the Old Town Common rotary before stopping in front of Fire Station 2 just before 10:30 a.m. Friday.

There were no injuries reported. Police said the man driving the car had suffered a medical emergency while driving, which led to the accident. The driver was taken to Lawrence General Hospital.

There had been a report that the car had crashed into the fire station, but that was a miscommunication. Firefighters at the station said the accident wasn't nearly as bad as it had sounded and the car simply ended up in front of the station after the accident.

The damage to the rotary will be paid for by the driver's insurance company, police said.
