BREAKING: Bank Robbing Suspect Arrested

The man is suspected of robbing multiple banks in the area.

Police have made an arrest in connection with Saturday's bank robbery in North Andover, and the man charged is suspected of robberies Chelmsford, Reading and Salem, N.H., as well.

Joseph Costello, 26, of 52 Lawrence Drive, Lowell, was arrested Tuesday for attempted armed robbery after investigation by police in the four communities.

Costello allegedly walked into saying he had explosives in the bank. After a teller told him to take off his sunglasses, he allegedly fled without getting any cash.

Police and fire crews did a sweep of the store and made sure there were no explosives, and the building was reopened for business within an hour.

North Andover Police Detective Daniel Cronin said tips from the community, largely on Facebook, led them to Costello.

Police say this may just just the latest hit in an area spree.

Costello is suspected of recently

And on July 2, , when police say a man matching Costello's description walked into the Citizens Bank at Shaw's on South Broadway that afternoon and handed the teller a note saying he had a bomb and a hostage and demanding money.

And this past Thursday, a man matching Costello's description in Chelmsford in a similar fashion.

There was surveillance video in all of the incidents.

Costello has not been charged with the Chelmsford or Reading robberies, but an investigation is still pending. A warrant has been issued out of Salem, N.H., for his arrest in connection with that robbery.

Costello is in custody awaiting arraignment in Lawrence District Court.
