Accused Shoplifter Charged With Assaulting Police

The following information was supplied by the North Andover Police Department. Where arrests or charges are mentioned, it does not indicate a conviction.

Police say a man accused of shoplifting at CVS on Turnpike Street earlier this week assaulted a police officer when apprehended.

Carlos Santiago, 52, of 133 Essex St., Lawrence, has been charged with two counts of assault of a police officer in addition to shoplifting, resisting arrest, disorderly conduct.

A CVS employee called North Andover Police Saturday night just before midnight and reported two potential shoplifters. Police went to the store and confronted Santiago.

Officers Jack McEvoy and Patrick Bierne went to the store, and McEvoy reportedly observed Santiago stealing merchandise in his jacket.

"The officers confronted him and placed him under arrest, and the suspect decided to fight the officers," Police Lt. Charles Gray said.

Bierne held on to Santiago, who began violently kicking and punching the officers before he was subdued, Gray said.

According to police reports, Bierne suffered an injured hand and finger.

Saturday, March 23

At 9:56 p.m., a caller on Farnum Street reported a dispute with her son. William Lynch Jr., 25, of 247 Farnum St., North Andover, was charged with assault and battery of a household member and malicious property damage.

Sunday, March 24

At 10:47 a.m., police found two youths fighting on the basketball court at Aplin Playground. Both refused medical treatment.

At 1:52 p.m., a resident walked into the station with a small dog he found, a black and white terrier. The dog was taken to Andover Animal Hospital.

At 6:02 p.m., a caller at Edgewood Retirement Community requested to have a staffer there removed. Staff spoke with police and said the resident was just being "crabby."
