DeCologero Decries Buffer Zone Decision

NORTH ANDOVER – Calling the US Supreme Court’s decision to overturn the Massachusetts buffer zone a “major disappointment” and “setback” for women’s health, Phil DeCologero (D-North Andover) called upon the State Legislature to prioritize passing legislation to protect patients and employees.

“I’m definitely concerned about increased harassment and intimidation,” said DeCologero, who is seeking the Democratic nomination for the 14th Essex District.  “This shouldn’t be about whether you believe in a woman’s right to make her own decisions about medical care, it’s about whether you believe in public safety.”

The Massachusetts Buffer Zone law was enacted in 2007 and created a 35-foot zone around health clinics serving women.  The zone prevents protesters from loitering and harassing women and employees as they enter facilities.

“It’s sad to think that among the many things a person may face before visiting one of these health centers, they must also now consider being confronted in a very public way on a very personal, private decision,” said DeCologero.

"I hope Massachusetts acts swiftly to ensure the safety of patients," continued DeCologero, "and if such action isn't taken then you can count on me to be a leader who you can trust to pursue responsible policy to keep Massachusetts women safe."
