DeCologero Calls For Greater Transparency

Students, parents, and activists from across the Merrimack Valley gathered at Haverhill’s Maria’s Restaurant on Wednesday for the Merrimack Valley Young Democrats’ Annual Spring Event.  Among the candidates addressing the crowd was Phil DeCologero (D-North Andover) who is running to represent the 14th Essex State Representative district.

“I’ve had amazing opportunities – both personally and professionally – to help make the Merrimack Valley a better place to live and work,” said DeCologero.  “I see a real opportunity for us to do even better.”

“If we want people to have faith in government, then we need our officials to increase the transparency and accessibility of government," continued DeCologero. "We need our officials to keep their promises.”

DeCologero, who is running against Rep. Diana DiZoglio (D-Methuen), faulted the incumbent for not delivering on her promise to increase government transparency.

“The incumbent promised to promote transparency in the State Legislature,” said DeCologero, “but when she got there she voted against putting committee votes online.  She voted against requiring that all bills be online for at least 24 hours before they’re voted on.  That’s unacceptable.”

In addition to transparency, DeCologero, who formerly worked for the Massachusetts Legislature and Methuen Mayor Steve Zanni, spoke about the importance of supporting early and higher education programs, as well economic development.

“I want to see our State government working with municipalities to create an environment that will spur responsible business development,” said DeCologero, who pointed to expanding sewer lines down Route 125 in North Andover as one of the ways the state could encourage local growth.

“This corridor has been identified as one of the Merrimack Valley’s best prospects for economic development,” explained DeCologero.  “I’d like to see our state be a partner in this venture.”

DeCologero spoke about his early introduction to public service as a student at North Andover High School, a passion that continued as he went on to study at Merrimack College.

“I’ve had great experiences working with people in communities throughout the Merrimack Valley,” said DeCologero, who discussed working with members of the community through the North Andover Merchants Association, the Methuen Sons of Italy, and the North Andover Democratic Town Committee.

“The primary responsibility of our State Representatives has to be as an advocate for the communities and people they represent,” continued DeCologero.  “I’ll be that advocate.”
