North Andover Honors Korean War Vets

"These people stood up and said, 'Send me,' and we are forever grateful." -- North Andover Selectman Chair Rosemary Smedile

In North Andover, Veterans Day was dedicated to veterans of the Korean War, which ended 60 years ago.

Often called "the forgotten war" due to the lack of attention it received in the decades following as well as its historical placement between the global World War II and the long Vietnam War, the Korean War was the first United States battle against communism.

Navy Ensign Robert Ernest Wainwright of North Andover served in that war and in October 1950, while on a Navy minesweeper, he and 20 of his shipmates were lost at sea when their vessel was destroyed. Selectmen chose to give special honor to Wainwright this Veterans Day, along with the many others who served in the Korean War.
