What's New at North Andover Historical Society

The following was submitted by the North Andover Historical Society.

The Historical Society's properties survived Tropical Storm Irene without a scratch -- or more importantly, a drop of water inside. The staff worked hard on Thursday and Friday to ensure that we were prepared for the original category 1 or 2 hurricane predicted. In this case, we are all very happy that all that work was unnecessary!

Coming up Next: This Saturday is First Period Saturday at the Parson Barnard House between 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Bring your friends and visiting relatives for the next to last chance to view the Parson Barnard house for free! Our traveling shop will be open for business -- a perfect place to shop for those hard to please history buffs on your upcoming gift lists. The painting of the Parson Barnard House is coming along very well. Thanks to the outpouring of supporters of our Pathways to the Past fundraiser, we raised enough to completely fund this project.  Come see the progress this weekend!

The next and final 17th Century Saturday will be held on Saturday, Oct. 3.

Trails and Sails, The Crossroads Village and the Hay Scales, Friday, Sept. 16, 4:30 to 6 p.m. (tour begins at 153 Academy Road). Two Weekends of Walks and Water celebrates it 10th Anniversary this year and the North Andover Historical Society has been part of this county wide celebration from year one! Did you know that North Andover has the oldest Hay Scales Office building in the country? Join us this year on Friday, Sept. 16, at the Society's Headquarters at 4:30 p.m. to begin a tour of the Crossroads Village and your opportunity to go inside our own Hay Scales building, located at the corner of Andover and Osgood Streets.  (No, the big red building on Johnson Street was never the site of the hay weighing scales--and this tour will explain where all the confusion began.)

We will also travel through the Crossroads Village before arriving at this historic agricultural and transportation landmark.  Event capacity: 30--no reservations.  Doors open at 4:15 p.m. for registration. www.northandoverhistoricalsociety.org
