VIDEO: North Andover Celebrates Memorial Day

Hundreds of people gathered Monday morning in North Andover to honor those who have served our country with great pride and courage.

Sunday morning, North Andover celebrated Memorial Day with a parade and a service honoring those who have dedicated their lives for our country.

The parade began at the corner of Osgood and Andover streets continued on to Massachusetts Avenue, and Salem Street and finished at where residents praised guest speakers and people who have lost their loved ones in battle.

Memorial Day, a holiday where we salute those who serve our country and remember soldiers who have served in the armed forces, is a day that North Andover resident Barbara Walsh keeps close to her heart.

“I am so happy that so many people showed up to today," Walsh said. "It is so important that we give back to these soldiers for all that they have done for us. I want there to be an even bigger turnout next year."

Past veterans and U.S military soldiers marched in the parade as children and adults clapped on the side to show their respect. The North Andover High School marching band and baton twirlers led the parade with pride. Although the ceremony was held to honor all of who have lost their lives, there was a special recognition for James M. Cassidy. Cassidy was a North Andover resident, and a brave World War II veteran who died in early April.

North Andover residents cheered on their family and friends who participated in the event.  Children as young as four-years-old raised the American flag and screamed as soldiers marched by them.

North Andover police followed the 25-minute parade as the sun reached an 83 degree temperature. At the end of the ceremony, white balloons covered the sky as they were released to show respect for those who have lost their lives in past wars.
