Two Girls, Two Big Hearts, and a Waffle Stand

The following was submitted by Sheri Marnoto.

What happens when you get two great friends together with one silly idea? Lots of money for a good cause.

Sonia Marnoto (9yrs.) and Ella Slayton (9 yrs.) have been friends since attending the Village Preschool together and they have one thing in common:  the love to come up with grand ideas and make them happen!  The idea of selling waffles to raise money for charity began one day after school when the girls hopped into Sonia’s mom’s minivan and started searching for snacks.  They came up with the idea of making a restaurant in the car to satisfy all of the hungry kids who walk to the park after school.  This idea soon transformed into a food stand, as suggested by Sonia’s dad.  The girls were intrigued, and decided that a waffle stand would be perfect, because after all, who doesn’t love homemade waffles, especially when topped with whipped cream, strawberries, maple syrup and chocolate sauce!  So, Sonia and Ella decided that the perfect day to try out their stand would be Sargent School’s early release day.

They had a plan. They asked Sonia’s dad to be the waffle-maker, Ella’s mom to be the strawberry-cutter, and Sonia’s mom to pack her minivan up with a table, a food stand, and all of the other fixings.  The girls would make colorful signs and spread the word to all of their friends.  Now all they needed was a cause they believed in.  After experiencing their first Red Sox game together last year and loving every minute of it, they chose the Jimmy Fund, a cause to help fight Cancer strongly supported by their favorite baseball team- The Red Sox.

It all came together on a beautiful sunny Thursday when they proudly stood behind their stand and served up delicious waffles to many hungry kids who generously supported their cause.  It was truly a day to remember!
