New Hiking Trails Suggested Along Merrimack River

A recent planning report features possible new hiking and biking trails along the Merrimack River in North Andover.

A report, funded by a grant from the Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation, highlights numerous improvements to the Merrimack River Trail. It suggests that new trails along the Merrimack River in North Andover could eventually be developed.

The Merrimack Valley Planning Commission and the Essex National Heritage Commission announced the release of the planning report jointly.

The report was developed thanks to input from advocates throughout the Merrimack Valley. The plan includes improvements throughout the entire 50-mile trail.

Currently, no trails exist along the Merrimack River in North Andover. This is due to the MBTA commuter rail’s proximity to the river. Due to this, safety and access are important planning considerations noted in the report.

Area between the railroad tracks and river could eventually be used for hiking and biking trails. The report states, “While there have not been any potential trails identified along the Merrimack River in North Andover, there may be sufficient land between the railroad and the river to support a riverside trail at some point in the future.”

The report also acknowledges the mixed-use development at Osgood Landing along Route 125. It suggests that, “…the town may want to consider the idea of creating a multi‐use path along the railroad tracks to connect that neighborhood with the downtown.”
