Hurricane Irene: Survival Tips For Minimal Damage

If Hurricane Irene makes its way to New England this weekend, make sure you're prepared beforehand to avoid any damage to your home. 

We've compiled a list of tips to survive the storm, and encounter as little damage as possible to your home. 

• Now is a good time to make sure trees and shrubs around your home are well trimmed.
• Clear loose and clogged rain gutters and downspouts.
• Tape won't prevent windows from breaking. Instead, secure permanent storm shutters or marine plywood on windows. 
• Reduce roof damage by installing straps or additional clips to securely fasten your roof to the frame structure. 
• During a hurricane, turn the refrigerator thermostat to its coldest setting and keep its doors closed.
• Turn off propane tanks. Avoid using the phone, except for serious emergencies.
• Listen to the radio or TV. If you are instructed to evacuate, do so. If you cannot, take refuge in a small interior room, closet, or hallway on the lowest level.
