  • This Day in History: In 1881, Chester A. Arthur became the 21st president of the United States after President James A. Garfield died. In 1884, the Equal Rights Party was formed in San Francisco. In 1946, the first Cannes Film Festival premiered. In 1984, "The Cosby Show" premiered on NBC.
