- Energy Help: The Salvation Army’s Massachusetts Good Neighbor Energy Fund opened to applications on Wednesday.. The fund is a cooperative effort between the state's energy companies, their customers and The Salvation Army. It helps households in temporary crisis who do not qualify for federal or state assistance with the payment of their energy expenses. This year's Fund disbursement is $350 per eligible household for the heating season. For more information on the Fund and how to apply, call 800-334-3047. - This Day in History: In 1878, in Connecticut, the first telephone switchboard was installed. In 1916 Louis D. Brandeis became the first Jewish member of the Supreme Court. In 1938, in Vermont, the first ski tow started operation. In 1986, the space shuttle Challenger exploded after takeoff, killing all seven people on board.
