Five Things You Need to Know: Aug. 22

The morning commute could be rainy.

Today is Monday, Aug. 22. Here are five things you need to know:

  • Weather: There is a 60 percent chance of rain today most before 11 a.m. The high temperature will be about 80 degrees. Source: National Weather Service.
  • Brothers Critical: Before dawn yesterday, two North Andover brothers were hospitalized after suffering serious injuries in a fiery crash on Storrow Drive in Boston. Click to read more, and check back with Patch for further updates. 
  • Cross Country: Do you have a middle school student who enjoys running? The North Andover Booster Club is beginning a cross country program for 6th, 7th, and 8th graders. Stay tuned for information on registration and the team's coaches.
  • Training Camp: The Scarlet Knights football team starts camp today with a practice at 4 p.m. You can watch them practice at Walsh Stadium at The team's first scrimmage is on Saturday at 9 a.m. at home against Ipswich. 
  • This Day in History: In 1762, Ann Franklin became the editor of the Mercury of Newport in Rhode Island, becoming first female editor of an American newspaper. In 1775, England's King George III proclaimed the American colonies to be in a state of open rebellion. In 1902, President Theodore Roosevelt became the nation's first president to ride in an automobile. In 1989, Nolan Ryan became the first major league pitcher to strike out 5000 batters.
