The voters of North Andover approved an increase in the town's meal tax, a controversy erupted at the North Andover School Committee, and the Merrimack Hockey team shot up in the national polls.

By a margin of 253 to 246, North Andover voters decided to increase the meals tax from 6.25% to 7%. The vote will increase a $100 bill by seven cents.

Earlier this month, Superintendent Chris Hottel came under fire for about the proposed school construction projects and the meals tax. While that letter highlighted arguments in favor of the tax, it was not illegal and did not explicitly tell parents to vote for the tax. This controversy came up at the latest School Committee Meeting.

Patch was present to cover North Andover's Special Town Meeting on Tuesday. We were the first to provide the results of the vote on the proposed meals tax.

The Merrimack College hockey team is currently ranked #2 in the nation. They are the only remaining team in the United States with an undefeated record. The Warriors are 8-0-1. On Friday, we featured their senior goalie Joe Cannata.

Former State Sen. Richard Tisei announced on Tuesday at the Americal Civic Center in Wakefield that he will be running for U.S. Congress to represent the 6th district in Massachusetts in the 2012 elections. We asked our users what they thought of Tisei's announcement.
