Winter Sport Injuries

In light of the recent figure skating championships in Boston, & the 2014 Winter Olympics, it is important to be aware of the potential hazards that accompany snow and winter sports, so children and adults alike can engage in fun and safe activities.
Skiing & Snowboarding: Whether you are traveling up north or taking advantage of Blue hills and Wachusett,   skiers and snowboarders should always be cautious on the mountain. Helmets should always be worn. Ski goggles will protect eyes from snow and ice. With the recent drop in temperature, ice patches are more common. Carve with caution on steep slopes, and be aware of signage warning you of upcoming hazards. Avoid wearing headphones or earbuds, as they will block out the sounds of fellow skiers coming down the mountain.
Ice Skating: With local options such as frog pond and the new Rowes Wharf rink, ice skating in the city is a fun and easily accessible. Helmets should always be worn, and rinks will rent them to skaters. Be aware of the kind of skate you are using. Hockey skates and figure skating skates are structurally different, and figure skaters' often have toe picks. Should you venture to a local natural frozen pond, be sure it is completely frozen through. If unsure, play it safe and don't skate.
Sledding: Sledding can be fun for the whole family, but young children who are still taking advantage of the snow left from the recent storm should be reminded about hazards on the hills. Sledders should avoid obstacles such as trees and benches that may be covered. The bottom of the hill should have a distance long enough for the sled to run out of momentum, and should never abut roads or water.
Bobsledding: Believe it or not, many areas offer bobsledding lessons . These sleds can reach up to 60 mph and are becoming more popular with the upcoming olympics. Instructors will take you through the necessary precautions.
