Thanksgiving Day Injuries

After all the preparation and arrival of family and friends on Thanksgiving, there are many things we can reflect on and be thankful for. There are also a few hazards we need to be aware of on this fast approaching holiday.

Choking

On a day centered around food, it is not unheard of for adults and children to get carried away with a bites too big or to overwhelm themselves during their crazy uncle’s story. Review the Heimlich maneuver and the universal signs for choking.

Cuts

Particularly for the hosts, all the preparation seems redundant when you are slicing and serving while simultaneously entertaining. One slip can result in a bad cut. When around food, there is a greater risk for bacteria to enter and cause an infection. Pay attention when carving, chopping, and dicing.

Burns

However you cook the big bird, be aware of the stove, fire, or fryer. Avoid wearing loose clothing, or leaving any open flames unattended. Move cautiously with hot liquids as to not splash it around. When opening covered pots, open the side farthest away from you to avoid the steam.

Concussions and Contusions

Young siblings and cousins have a tendency to roughhouse and may venture outside for a Thanksgiving football game.  Encourage touch football so that they aren’t reenacting their favorite player’s tackle. Should someone have any type of blow to the head, monitor them for any change in behavior or loss of consciousness. If you have any reservations, play it safe and get them examined for a concussion.

Thanksgiving and holiday hazards are inevitable, but can be easily avoided. Slow down, pay attention, and be prepared and you can prevent many of these possible injuries. Should one of your family members sustain a non-life-threatening injury, Doctors Express North Andover is open weekdays from 8am - 8pm and on weekends 8am - 5pm.
