HEAD REPORTER OF WBUR'S "THE ANIMALIST" TO HIGHLIGHT MSLAW'S ANIMAL RIGHTS DAY

Vicki Croke, head reporter for WBUR’s “The Animalist" and the author of The Boston Globe's "Animal Beat" column for 13 years, will be a featured presenter at the Eighth Annual Animal Rights Day on Saturday, April 19.  The event will be held at Massachusetts School of Law (MSLAW) in Andover. 

Ms. Croke, who also hosted NECN-TV’s “The Secret Life of Animals” and is currently working on a book about J.H. Williams and the company of elephants he led for the Allied Forces in WWII, will offer her presentation at 12:00 noon.  Along with Christen Goguen, her co-producer for The Animalist, she will be showing a compilation of the most interesting stories she has created for the WBUR website.

Also presenting at MSLAW’s Animal Rights Day will be renowned author and veterinary surgeon Nick Trout.  Staff surgeon at the prestigious Angell Animal Medical Center in Boston, Trout is the author of three non-fiction books, the novel The Patron Saint of Lost Dogs, and a new novel, Dog Gone, Back Soon, to be published by Hyperion.

Starting at 9:00 am, Animal Rights Day will feature a full slate of topical animal issues presented by animal rights experts, combined with animal tricks and demonstrations. The event, hosted by the Massachusetts School of Law (MSL), is free and open to the public.  MSLAW’s Animal Rights Day offers many opportunities to learn about legal issues related to animal rights and animal cruelty from recognized legal experts in the field of animal rights law, including estate planning for pets and dog bite liability.  Attendees will also be able to:

·       Watch a police dog demonstration by the Essex County Sheriff's department

·       Learn about bats from expert Nate Fuller

·       See a working fire truck from the Andover Fire Department

·       Watch a demonstration on dog training from Andover-based BlueDog

·       Learn about the Merrimack River Feline Rescue Society

·       Meet Angels Among Us Pet Rescue

·       Meet noted Veterinarian Dr. Hedley Marx

            Humane-itarian awards will be presented to Kara Holmquist, Dr. Hedley Marx, and  Dr. Trout.  The awards are given to individuals who made significant contributions to animal rights in the past year. 

Kids’ activities will also be available, including an Easter Egg Hunt with the Easter Bunny.  A complimentary breakfast will kick off the event at 8:30 a.m.
