Jon Borrelli, 16, a junior at North Andover High School, is eager to do his best this year and turn around his outlook on how important his high school career is. Borrelli moved to North Andover from Haverhill in the sixth grade. Transitioning from schools was very difficult for him. In middle school, Borrelli had negative social interactions with his peers. As Borrelli entered high school, he began to adjust, and his experience began to improve. “I have been working with Jon since his ninth grade year and have seen so much growth over these past three years," said Michelle O'Leary, school …
Naomi Hamlet, 16, has made a complete turn-around in her junior year from when she began attending North Andover High School. Hamlet is looking forward to attending either UMass Boston or UMass Amherst after graduating next year. She is interested in studying criminal justice and plans to be a detective. Hamlet's first two years at NAHS were somewhat difficult, and she struggled to maintain good grades. She has since changed her attitude and has been putting all of her effort into improving her academic standing. She says has realized that in order to achieve her goal of attending college …
Kara Mongell, 18, is a senior at the North Andover High School. She is extremely motivated to maintain her grades this semester and to get the most out of her senior year. Mongell was born deaf and has learned to overcome her disability and have a positive outlook on life. One of the first things that Mongell learned was to help others. When Mongell was young, her mother was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis, and Mongell did everything she could to help out around the house for her mother. "If you want to get on with your life and deal with any struggle, it's important to advocate for …
Dillon MacInnis, 15, is making a great impression in his freshman year at North Andover High School. MacInnis is an athlete, musician, class president and honors student and is involved in clubs and activities at the high school. "Dillon has been a breath of fresh air for our school, seizing the opportunities that have presented themselves to him," said guidance counselor Steve Nugent. He has not wasted any time in putting himself out there." MacInnis lived in Tewksbury prior to moving here in the seventh grade. He attended St. Michael's school up until this year, transferring to NAHS. He …
Shaina Lumb, 17, is in her senior year at the North Andover High School. Lumb grew up in Haverhill and moved here with her family to start off her freshman year a little over three years ago. She had to do some adjusting into a new school and community but immediately was welcomed by fellow classmates her first day at school. "The atmosphere my first day was very friendly, and I adapted here very quickly," said Lumb. When Lumb moved here, she did not know anyone, but one of the students at NAHS had recognized her from dance competitions that they had participated in. Lumb has been dancing …
Dana McManus, 17, is a very well-rounded student in her junior year at North Andover High School. She has found that much of her motivation comes from both her mother and grandmother. McManus is currently the President of Best Buddies, a program which helps create friendships with students who have intellectual and developmental disabilities. Her mother used to teach special education, and her grandmother taught deaf and blind children. McManus has found inspiration through her family. Jake Mehlman, 17, is in the top 11 percent in his class. He is in his senior year at the North Andover High School, and has an exciting year ahead of him. He is the captain of the varsity wrestling team at the high school and has been wrestling since he was in the third grade. During his freshman year in high school, he also played lacrosse and football, but stopped other sports to focus and specialize in wrestling. Mehlman's guidance counselor, Megan Francis, recognizes him as "a team player, often volunteering to wrestle above his weight limit if he feels it will benefit the team as a whole…
Yuka Fuchino, 16, is in her junior year at North Andover High School. Fuchino was born in Iwate, Japan, and moved to Massachusetts when she was 4 years old, first living in Lowell and moving to North Andover a year later. Fuchino speaks fluent Japanese. When her family found out that they were moving to the United States, they were very excited, and Fuchino and her older sister and brother were enrolled in English as a Second Language classes immediately. Fuchino has visited Japan three times since her family moved here. Her family is the first of their relatives to move to the United States…
Jasmine Greenwood, 14, is a freshman at North Andover High School. Aftergrowing up in Lawrence, Greenwood moved to North Andover about two years ago. She attended St. Michael's School in North Andover for her 7th grade year, and then transferred to the North Andover Middle School to complete her 8th grade year. At first, Greenwood found it difficult to adjust to a new school, where everyonealready knew each other, but she quickly adapted. Greenwood is glad to live in North Andover and attend school here. Tyler McCarthy, 17, is the senior class president at the North Andover High School and says he has a great year planned ahead for his graduating class. And he has been elected class president for all four years that he has attended NAHS. "I work well with the other class officers, and I wanted to get certain things done this year," McCarthy said. "I want to be a role model and support the class in their needs." Being class president, McCarthy takes on the role of leadership, responsibility, and also relating to his classmates. He wants to be there for all of the groups in the senior class. …
