As the school year inches toward the end, high school seniors are waiting for their yearbooks. Well, a video on YouTube -- which was apparently uploaded by a mystery person called "rvaillancourt" -- has a slideshow of the 1981 yearbook. So of course, it had to be shared on Patch. Ronald Reagan was the nation's new president, almost as popular as Pac-Man. Microsoft released a new thing called DOS. Olivia Newton-John got physical, David Bowie was under a lot of pressure and there were rumblings about a new thing called MTV. And these NAHS students got ready to graduate. If you look closely, …
Nothing says flashback like a 22-year-old prom video. And that's why, as parents help their kids pick out prom fashions this season, we're reminding them what people in their generation looked like at their prom. This video was posted on YouTube and it needs to be shown. It's video footage someone took at the North Andover High School 1990 Prom. George Bush's dad was president. The Soviet Union was crumbling. Madonna was striking a pose, C&C Music Factory made you sweat, and LL Cool J claimed his mama said to knock you out. And these NAHS seniors kicked off their high-top sneakers and Z-…
Remember the old North Andover High School? Well check out this YouTube video, posted by "oddfreakperson," of the old local student stomping grounds. And of course, a kudos for the creative videography. The current high school building located on Osgood Street opened in 2005. Do you have a cool video from the past? Send it, or a link, to Bryan.McGonigle@patch.com.
Thomson Elementary School was founded in 1924, but in 1999 the original building was torn down and a new one was built right next to it. Check out this YouTube video some local residents filmed in the old Thomson building before it was demolished.
When you look out your window and complain that it's raining, remember it could be worse. Remember a few years ago when the town flooded? Well this week's North Andover Nostalgia is this YouTube clip of flooded homes and office buildings and efforts to evaluate the damage.
We have had a very mild, uneventful winter thus far. And to get more perspective on just how tame the winter has been, check out our North Andover Nostalgia pick of the week. A local resident filmed while his driveway was being plowed during last winter's intense snowfall. Yes, there is a driveway under all that snow.
In honor of Valentine's Day, this week's North Andover Nostalgia video clip features a creative romantic moment in 2006 when local resident Scott Bowman livened up the holiday season by popping the question. As he mentioned on a recent Patch post, Bowman was at his then-girlfriend's family Christmas party and rigged the Yankee Swap so that she had the last number. Her Yankee Swap gift was a proposal. "And no, she didn't trade it," Bowman wrote.
Talk about a blast from the past. There's a video on Youtube from the AT&T Archives, "In the Merrimack Valley," that features the Western Electric building (which later became Lucent Technology and is now Ozzy Properties). It offers a detailed look at what it took to maintain our telephone system back then as well as a glimpse of the Merrimack Valley at a simpler time. Which locations or people do you recognize in this video? Leave a comment and discuss this treasure from history.
