About this column:

Coverage of the campaign for Massachusetts' Sixth Congressional District.
After an election, the losing candidate usually gives a concession speech and then goes quietly about his or her life. But Bill Hudak is no ordinary losing candidate. A week after the election which put Congressman John Tierney back in the House of Representatives for an eighth term and failed to deliver a victory for Republican Bill Hudak of Boxford, Hudak sent out an email to his supporters promising to keep asking for more donations. "Well, I'm not one to leave a job unfinished," Hudak write to his supporters. "And I refuse to accept that John Tierney, who stands with Nancy Pelosi more …
The voters of Massachusetts' Sixth Congressional District have reelected Democratic Congressman John Tierney to an eighth term. Tierney defeated his Republican challenger, Bill Hudak of Boxford, winning 57 percent of the vote. Hudak won 43 percent. "We want John," the crowd chanted in the Hawthorne Hotel grand ballroom -- Tierney campaign headquarters of the evening. Then with "Still the One" by Orleans blaring through the room, Tierney entered from the back door and ascended to the stage with an ear-to-ear smile and his wife Patrice at his side. Hudak had conceded and the race was projected…
As Election Day began, Congressman John Tierney and Republican challenger Bill Hudak showed up at the polls to cast their votes. Hudak voted at Spofford Pond School in Boxford at 8 a.m. "We campaigned hard every day for 15 hours every day for 17 months," Hudak said. "I'm optimistic that the hard work is going to pay off, and we'll wait to see tonight." Tierney voted at Bentley Elementary School in Salem at 8:30 a.m. "As I crisscross the district and talk with voters, supporters, and volunteers, their energy and enthusiasm are evident," Tierney said. "I am pleased to see so many voters out …
Congressman John Tierney is hitting challenger Bill Hudak again over the idea that hudak wants to dismantle the U.S. Department of Education -- which Tierney insists Hudak wants to do and Hudak insists he does not. "While Bill Hudak supports efforts to jeopardize our schools and communities, John Tierney is fighting to make education stronger and more affordable for our families," Tierney spokesperson Laura Keiter said in a statement that accused Hudak of wanting to eliminate the Department of Education and do away with Pell Grants and other federal assistance for college education. "Now that…
Despite the best efforts of moderator Richard Holbrook, chairman and CEO of Eastern Bank, to keep the congressional debates civil last night at St. Mary's High School in Lynn Thursday evening, he could not control the two candidates Democratic Congressman John Tierney and his Republican challenger Bill Hudak of Boxford. Before an audience of about 150 people, Hudak said Tierney has run an "anti-American, unreasonable, smear campaign" by continuing to criticize Hudak for putting a defamatory sign in his yard that made President Obama look like 9-11 mastermind Osama Bin Laden. Tierney said …
In yet another surprising twist, Republican congressional candidate Bill Hudak of Boxford dropped his defamation lawsuit against Congressman John Tierney Wednesday in Essex Superior Court in Lawrence.  Just two days before, Hudak had filed the suit alleging Tierney was libeling him with campaign ads that misrepresented Hudak's political views and requested an emergency injunction to prevent Tierney from airing the ads any further. A hearing was scheduled for Wednesday, and Hudak requested a subpoena to force Tierney to testify at that hearing. Tierney said the suit was frivoulous and …
The Sixth Congressional District seat race took yet another bizarre turn Monday when Republican challenger Bull Hudak filed a defamation lawsuit against incumbent Rep. John Tierney in Essex Superior Court. The lawsuit claims that Tierney is committing libel by running an ad that says Hudak wants to eliminate the mortgage interest tax deduction to destroy the middle class. It cites other parts of the ad -- which was been run more than 160 times -- that Hudak claims are defamatory and misleading about Hudak's political positions. "This lawsuit is a matter of principle; my opponent is …
The campaign of Bill Hudak, www.hudakforcongress.com, candidate for U.S. Congress in the 6th Massachusetts Congressional District, announced today that it has received the endorsement of former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney.  Mitt Romney's Free and Strong America PAC has contributed the maximum of $5,000 to Bill Hudak's campaign committee. "I am honored to accept the endorsement and support of Governor Romney," said Bill Hudak. "The Governor has been a national leader in the fight against the culture of higher taxes, higher spending, and higher debt. With his support of our campaign, we …
In a bold move to strike an already embattled congressman in an already nasty race, the Massachusetts Republican Party is stepping up its push against Congressman John Tierney, D-MA, by way of Washington, D.C. The Massachusetts Republican Party Chair Jennifer Nassour announced Tuesday that the organization has filed a complaint with the Office of Congressional Ethics – not to be confused with the House Ethics Committee, which is a different entity – and is calling for an investigation into Tierney relating to his wife's recent legal troubles. Earlier this month, Patrice Tierney was charged …
Congressman John Tierney, D-Salem, and Republican challenger William Hudak exchanged barbs at Thursday's candidate debate in Beverly.  But the fireworks didn't just happen on the stage. In the audience, more than 800 people, many of whom supporters of both candidates, voiced their support and opposition of each of the candidates -- both during the debate and before the event.  In this video, Patch spoke to a handful of supporters for both candidates and they told us why they are supporting their candidate.
The 800 people who packed the auditorium in Beverly's Memorial Building on Thursday night got the show they wanted, with a sharp exchange on the issues – and attacks – in a debate between both candidates for Congress in the sixth district. The room came alive as both U.S. Rep. John Tierney, a Democrat from Salem, and Republican challenger Bill Hudak of Boxford exchanged barbs about allegations that Hudak displayed a sign in front of his home that showed then-presidential candidate Barack Obama dressed as Osama bin Laden with the word "Not Wanted." The sign was an expression of his First …
Just when the race for Massachusetts' sixth district congressional seat didn't seem like it could get uglier, it has. Republican candidate Bill Hudak has released his first television campaign ad, and it holds back no punches. The video attacks John Tierney for his brother-in-law's illegal gambling business and attacks his wife for her role in tax fraud related to that business. The ad specifically says, "It's sad. Tierney raises taxes on our families, but thinks it's OK for his family not to pay their own." Tierney has never expressed approval of his brother-in-law's crimes. On his Web site…
Congressman John Tierney's campaign committee received a $1,000 donation, while he was running for Congress in 1996, from his brother-in-law who is currently on the run for operating an offshore illegal online gambling business, according to Federal Elections Commission filing reports. Robert Eremian, brother of Patrice Tierney, made a $1,000 donation to the John Tierney for Congress Committee in February 1996, a document filed with the FEC under its first quarter 1996 reports shows. Tierney's office has confirmed that the donation was made and said that as soon as Eremian was indicted this …
In an already ugly race, the 6th District congressional campaign war wages on, in the aftermath of a heated nine-minute debate aired on Fox 25 Thursday. On one side, Republican candidate Bill Hudak is seizing on a report that Congressman John Tierney, D-Salem, received campaign donations from his mother-in-law at the same time his brother-in-law was sending illegal funds to Massachusetts through a bank account run by Tierney's wife. On the other side, Tierney's campaign is denying any wrongdoing and calling Hudak out on several claims Hudak made during the debate that Tierney says are lies. …
When Congressman John Tierney, D-Salem, and Republican challenger Bill Hudak stepped into the ring last night, they didn't wait for the bell. They didn't pull any punches. And they wounded up clobbering the referee in pursuit of each other's jugulars. The main topic of the debate was the explosive news this week that Tierney's wife pleaded guilty to aiding and abetting her brother's false filing of tax returns after having managed a bank account into which her brother funneled more than $7 million in profits from an illegal offshore gambling business. Fox25 news anchor Maria Stephanos began …
Congressman John Tierney, D-MA, says his wife's recent felony conviction related to her brother's illegal gambling business will likely not cost him voter support. "I believe that voters know I have represented our communities with honor, integrity, and passion," Congressman Tierney said, before listing some of his accomplishments in Congress. "This election will be a choice, and I will continue to talk with voters and make clear why I would best represent them in Congress." But his Republican opponent Bill Hudak, in a statement released this week, jumped on the issue and called on Tierney to…
